Over crowding shouldn't be the issue. My coop and run are plenty big. It's somewhat of an open air coop with an attached run that they can come and go as they please. 6'L x 10'w coop with (2) 6' long roost bars opposite of each other. The coop is open to a 10'w x 14'L run. Here is my coop...
I've got a flock of 8 hens. 2 Silver Lakenvelder, 2 Production Red, 2 Lavender Orps, 1 red Sexlink and 1 black Sexlink. They have all been raised together as baby chicks. One of the Production Reds is really mean to the others and bully's them. Pecks at their combs and feathers. Just mean. She's...
Ahh that makes sense. I was thinking it was bloody poop splattered everywhere. I do have one bird that is a bully and picks on the 2 smallest ones. She likely pecked on of them in the comb or wattle. The splatters are consistent with one bleeding and shaking her head. I will check them again...
I have 8 hens all roughly 27 - 28 weeks old. 6 of them are laying and 2 are not yet. Went out to the coop Wednesday and there was blood on the roost bar and blood sprayed on the coop wall. All the birds are acting normal and and I looked at each one's butt and didn't see anything. I couldn't...
My wife got the 5 gallon RentAcoop waterer and I worry that they are not getting enough water. The water doesnt fill those little red cups, they have to peck at the silver ball and it just dribbles out. I sometimes go out there and hold the silver ball down and fill the cups up and they swarm it...
Update - I got the other roost bar and poop shelf installed. Also installed the laying boxes with a shelf in front of it for them to walk on. Id say Im 90 - 95% done. All I have left to do is finish some board and batten trim, hinge the door on the laying boxes and some paint.
I guess I got a bit lazy after the birds got into their new home. Combine that with my kids sports and I just needed a break from this thing. I underestimated how much work this would be.
I had a temporary roost bar that was "good enough for now". Yesterday I finally built the permanent roost...
I have 8 pullets that are roughly 11 - 12 weeks old. They've been in their new coop/run for 2 weeks. It's a 10' x 6' open air coop with an attached 10' x 14' run. Is it ok to let them out to free range in the evening? I'm pretty sure after being in their new home for 2 weeks that they will know...
I made a door and got it installed. And got the two big openings on the ends covered in HC. The birds are now finally in their new home! I still have a lot to do but at least its secure. Those girls are growing quick and they were DONE with the brooder.
I got some more done this weekend between softball games. Just need to build and install the main door, put hardware cloth on the openings at each end, and install the ridge vent and then the birds can go to their new home. Hopefully in the next few days
Progress is going slow. My kids have sports almost every day. Aaaand.... we had a storm coming a week or so ago so I threw a tarp over it because it would have standing water in there due to the pavers not allowing water to drain. Well the tarp acted like a sail and the wind blew the frame over...
