My Cochin is always in the nesting box; and she's also getting bullied by 2nd chicken in the pecking order

I am going to try this. I was putting the sussex in the jail; but sounds like things will go quicker if I put the broody cochin into jail. I will say that I *think* another reason the cochin is going to the nest is to hide from the other chicken. So - is the cochin hiding due to bullying; or is...

My Cochin is always in the nesting box; and she's also getting bullied by 2nd chicken in the pecking order

I've got 4 hens. Listed below in pecking order from top to bottom. New Hampshire Red Speckled Sussex Dominique White Cochin My White Cochin now wants to sit in the nesting box all day. And when I let her out, and the Sussex is out too, the sussex just wants to bully her. And by bully, I mean...

Sick Chicken - breathing heavily, lethargic

No obstructions or lesions that I could see. What I thought was her poop had been covered by the other chickens kicking dirt onto it.

Sick Chicken - breathing heavily, lethargic

I'll go in a bit to look for obstructions or lesions. I'll take a photo of poop I think is hers from last night. No coughing or sneezing, at least that I can recognize. Sick a month ago - she was standing still, and her head was drooping down and her eyes were closed, and her eyes also got...

Sick Chicken - breathing heavily, lethargic

I checked her crop. Seems like it's puffy. Unfortunately, I couldn't really find it. I tried to find similar on a couple of my other chickens and if I found them, they weren't firm. If her breath was sour, I didn't smell it from about 6" away.

Sick Chicken - breathing heavily, lethargic

Edited to add: She's an Andalusian, not a Dominique. That's one of our other ones.

Sick Chicken - breathing heavily, lethargic

    1) What type of bird, age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) - Breed is Dominique. Top chicken in pecking order. Don't know if she's small for her breed. She's one of the two largest of our 5 hens. Age is approximately 5 months. May have just started...

Comment by 'goletachickens' in article 'Dust Baths: What they are and why they are important'

Here's a blog post that says the jury is out on the harms DE can do to chickens. https://morningchores.com/diatomaceous-earth-for-chickens/ So now I'm confused.

Here's a photo of my chickens - wondering about breeds of the non-white one

Ok, found the invoice. Here's what they think we got: New Hampshire Red (assuming that's the reddish one) Speckled Sussex @Pretty Birds you nailed it Dominique (never heard of it!) Blue Andalusian White Cochin (not bantam - I assume they'd note that on the invoice).

Is it ok that our chickens roost on the rafter of their coop instead of inside on the roost bars?

Hey thanks for the info! We bought the coop on Craigs list about 3-4 years ago for cheap. Guess we got what we paid for. The coop (including the run, the whole thing was bolted all together, including the gopher cloth) sat in our yard for all that time. Finally due to Covid time, we moved it to...

Here's a photo of my chickens - wondering about breeds of the non-white one

Wondering about the breeds of my chickens. In the photo, you can see the 4 outside the coop, and the white one inside. The white one I know, it's a cochin (bantam or other, not sure). In fact looking it up is what brought me to this forum! But the 4 outside the coop - wondering... There's a...

Is it ok that our chickens roost on the rafter of their coop instead of inside on the roost bars?

Thanks good tips. As a total newbie, what is the difference between a standard and a bantam cochin? Size? Other?

Is it ok that our chickens roost on the rafter of their coop instead of inside on the roost bars?

Thank you. That settles my mind significantly. They are about 13 weeks old, so probably a bit more than a month before they will start laying I guess? But I'll put some decoy eggs in the nesting boxes now. Can't hurt I guess.

I'm attaching some photos... Hopefully they help make sense? Not sure what the area where the chickens are intended to roost is called?
