We ended up moving everyone outside at 4 weeks and they were in love. We did temporarily move them back inside for 2-3 nights this week because we're having a late cold snap. Unfortunately the move seems to be simultaneous with our roosters starting to act up. One rooster was attacked and we...
Unfortunately within a couple of days of moving everyone outside, at least one rooster became aggressive and pecked 3 other quail on the head. One quail was in terrible shape - after confirming he was a rooster, and mercy culled him. They are only 4.5 weeks old and not feather sexable, so we...
Chicks are 13 days old and I moved them into their Wynola Ranch hutch, which we will use indoors. They seem perfectly happy! This will be a fine size when we cull all but 1 rooster and just have a small colony of adult layers.
This was definitely the right choice! They seem really happy. We'll be culling all but 1 roo once we can sex everyone, so I think this will work perfectly for 5-6 adult birds.
Yes I agree, really long compared to other advice. I do think this book is assuming you'd be moving them outside. But a major draw to quail over chickens imo was that we could keep them inside during colder months
Hello!
I have ten 11-day old Coturnix, some of which I am now suspecting are Jumbos given some size differences between the chicks. The book I have been using as my guide (Urban Quail-Keeping) recommends keeping them in their brooder box until 6 weeks. But these dudes are growing so fast...
Man these babies do not keep for long! Pics taken at 1 week old. Also 2-3 of the chicks that we thought were Rosettas are turning gray/silver - very lovely. I am suspecting that we have some Jumbos in the mix.
Made the tough but humane choice to euthanize our splay leg chick last night. We were able to succesfully correct one of his two legs using the shot glass method, but his other leg seemed to actually dislocate from his hip joint. I then noticed that unlike all 10 other chicks, his wing feathers...
Thank you!
Sadly we did have to make the tough but humane choice to euthanize the splay leg chick last night. I noticed that his splay leg looked as if it had actually dislocated from his hip joint(?), and his wing feathers had not started to come in like the other chicks, which I presume was...
Ended up with 11 chicks that hatched on Day 25 - crazy! 1 has splay leg, not sure how he will do. We did have 1 dead in shell, and 4 pipped but never made it out. Learned a lot. I've got 4 new eggs in the incubator as of yesterday, and am keeping a 50watt reptile warming bulb over it to ensure...
Went okay - 11 of 30 hatched on day 25. 1 died in shell without pipping, 4 died after pipping. 1 of the 11 has splay leg. I attribute all of this to 1) eggs getting lost in the mail during cold weather, thanks USPS and 2) low temperature issues in incubator. Everybody has to start somewhere!
Curious as to what you all think! Little guys are 3 days old :)
I know the golden guy with the black dot is probably a Texas A&M - we call him Dot Dot and he's a screamer!
(Only took them out of the brooder briefly to clean, realized that I could get a good pic of their colors while they were...
