Hey all. Just wanted to give one more update. Jackie and the gang had ventured a great distance up one of our game trails, through the forest and over another trail to the neighbors where they were caught RUINING spring plants and newly mulched beds! After restricting their free-range time to an...
Oh my! That is not something I understood as a newbie. Three of my seven hens clearly molted and look fabulous and the others have not, despite their age! Thank you so much everyone! I'd be even more happy if Jackie's eggs find a way to get back to normal too, but I won't hold my breath, as it...
Hey Wyorp, I jut posted pics. I can't say with confidence that the ones that look raggedy went through a molt. I assumed they did and I didn't notice, since it's already spring. Are you suggesting that even though they hatched in march 2017 that they maybe didn't go through their adult molt yet...
Here's Jacqueline. Her barbs are really separated on her wing and tail. Other places too. She's missing feathers on her belly, near her crop, and on her neck. I do feel pin feathers. I didn't get pics of the spots with one hand and the camera and one had restraining her. She's looked a bit...
These are tiny ants. I think carpenter ants are large. And if the ants bite, I was thinking that maybe that would be making them itch/preen more vigorously? I'm just throwing any and all ideas out there because I won't stop until I find an answer, dang it! It's my very own affliction. Ha!
Agreed. I wasn't sure how long the Spinosad remains effective once it dries. Do you think nibbling nighttime ants could be to blame for the feather loss or is that far-fetched? I didn't see them before, so maybe there's a cache of red mites that I never saw too. I guess I need to just sit back...
Ok, thanks Wyorp. Both waterers have vitamins and electrolytes (plus probiotics) in them and I'm changing out those every other day. I also have Nutridrench that I can attempt. Would you switch the flocks feed to grower for a stint since there are feather probs? 5 are laying normally though...
I just went out to wipe the bottom of the roost where Jackie sleeps and nothing. I did not see evidence of mites, but did find several black ants curled up dead in the corner and picked up a few to get a better look. I didn't linger too long so I'll check again in the morn. I've never even seen...
Hi there. I'm on the Olympic Peninsula of WA state. We are in the forest, so no direct winter sun and things stay pretty damp all winter. I have mulch in their fenced yard so that they are not standing in mud/muck. It works, but the ground stays wet all winter. Not ideal, I know. I will try to...
Hi dawg53. I have treated the coop, twice in few days, with Elector PSP. I'm pretty thorough and aimed the stream of spray into each and every crack and joint I could see. I also used poultry dust on the roosts just in case. I still plan to go wipe the roost at night just to see if there's...
Hi all. My favorite 2 year old Amber-White hen has probs and I can't figure it out. The other 6 hens don't seem to be having this problem though one 2 year old gold sexlink lays eggs in separate parts and has for most of her life and may have some thinning feathers on her underside too. (I think...
