This is all really good advice. Thanks. My little roo seems to be a nice fella...so far. He does not like to be handled but he will sit down next to me and sleep. And he takes treats from my hand. I have 8 smaller chicks in the brooder and the freebie has bigger legs than the ones I know are...
Wanted to give an update. I put a listing for free rooster on Craigslist and marketplace. No takers. Winston had been in a cage for a week. Whenever I would put water in he would freak out and knock it over. I finally got the courage to say enough. I just dispatched him. I used the...
Some of my chicks took to me right away. One came out of the box totally in love with me. Some panicked every time I opened their cage. Now they older and most of them are comfortable and get excited to see me. Only 2 like to be held though. The rest love to sit near me or on me but I am...
I need some advice regarding our Buff Orpington rooster, Winston. We took him from a nice lady who couldn't keep him when she discovered he was a roo. So, he was hatched sometime in the spring. I have 30 chickens total. 8 are a month old and safely in a brooder. All female. 20 pullets that...
I opened the door today and let him decide. He came out happily. Worked in the garden with us and then went back in on his own. I guess I was worried about nothing. Thanks everyone! Here's a pic of him checking out the chicks
We are just starting out and our others are just chicks in their brooder. It will be a while before he has company. My concern is that he will not go back into the coop in the evening. I don't want to chase him all over the yard and freak him out
We rescued a buff orpington rooster last week. Right now he is our only adult chicken and is all alone in the coop. When can I let him out to free range? I feel bad he is cooped up all alone.
Hi everyone. I am considering adding Sumatras to my flock but I have read they do not like to be confined. I live in Michigan. Where do I put them in the winter? Do I force them to be in the coop with the other chickens or would they be better outside? Thanks
