    Dill's Giant Atlantic pumpkin diary

Or Cinderella. She got a beautiful carriage and a prince. The carriage did turn back to a pumpkin at midnight. It was a cool ride while it lasted and she got to keep the prince!

We also have some sassafras trees. I've seen mittens but never thought of chicken feet. 🤣 Historically, sassafras roots were also used to make a dye for fabrics and fishing nets.

The collards also help me give some greens to the chickens through the winter. They will eat but don't care for the mustards as much.

I think if you experiment with timing you can. They are very heat and cold hardy. Just know that a larger plant is more cold hardy then a seedling. As days get shorter growth slows also. I set seed in mid July indoors underlights. About 4 week old plants move to greenhouse then to morning sun...

I would probably not put these in the freezer. Just wash, remove large stems and cook them. $1.48 lb is a good price. I like a mix. When adding to the pot, I tear the largest ones. That would have been just fine. I tend to check BYC more as weather cools. I have more time. I don't have...

I did this when I used to grow collards in summer. It works well! When planted in spring they will grow all summer, fall and winter. Those plants would get huge. Collards are a bug magnet in summer so now I just plant them late summer. I've keep a check but hardly any bugs in the garden now...

This is me! Been right here all my life. That accent and all. I find once I take them out of the pot, most of the salt is left in the broth. Broth is known as "pot likker". When I chop them I usually add more black pepper but little if any salt. Ham hock can vary in saltiness. Some people...

Chilly here too. It's looking like fall. The gum trees scattered among the pines are looking golden. Something, oaks?, showing a little red and brown. And the rain! Yay! What a blessing! It has been dry so long. Nice slow soaking rains too! :celebrate

Yes, I cook them before freezing. They are seasoned and ready to eat. You can then remove a bag from the freezer, heat and eat. Surprisingly they do not turn to mush when cooked/frozen/reheated. Most people here considered them even better when warmed over. A cast iron skillet it the best way...

Still doing a little gardening here too. I think I've had a bit of a cold through the weekend so been moving slowly. Feeling on the mend now but still have the sniffles. Over the weekend got another pan of butterbeans picked. Pretty much picked the vines clean. Calling them done for the year...

The Omega Rocks: The Last & Ultimate Barred Plymouth Rock Flock

Just catching up. So sorry to read about Tally. RIP sweet girl. Downsizing? I've been trying to do this for about 3 years now. lol Come winter I always end up with 20+ birds. I don't think I've quite grasp that concept yet. Who knew hubby would get chick fever last spring??? So again I...

    Stormcrow's Hobby Farm

Sounds very similar to what we started with many years ago. Sandy in places and clay in others. This area was completely under the ocean all those thousands of years ago. Lots of shells and sharks teeth found when our wells were dug. It takes time to get a good base built up and $$$. We don't...
