Layering Bedding for Compost: Unpleasant for Chickens?

Just to clarify, I don't close the doors. They have the inside sliding door open and the side door you see in the pic open, in addition to the vent. Are you suggesting we install fans? (I removed the layered bedding and replaced with fresh)

Layering Bedding for Compost: Unpleasant for Chickens?

Thanks, I just read about fly strike tonight. Sounds awful! I'm learning a lot.

Layering Bedding for Compost: Unpleasant for Chickens?

Thank you, I was afraid of that. The flies are getting awful (we have a horse) on the sand inside the run. I think I'll remove the bedding tomorrow. Do you know if I can just add poop straight to the compost pile and forego the layering (separate topic...)? TIA

Layering Bedding for Compost: Unpleasant for Chickens?

Thanks for the dimensions. They are out in the yard with us during much of the day and there is a large dog kennel/run surrounding the coop. They only sleep and lay eggs in the coop. There is a roosting bar inside the coop and three nesting boxes in addition to the rest of the space inside and...

Layering Bedding for Compost: Unpleasant for Chickens?

Thanks for responding. I'm very new, so I have not heard much yet. No thermometer. We are three weeks into this. I keep the coop doors open unless it's raining, so the ventilation is from the round vent, the side door, and the inside door in the cage part.

Layering Bedding for Compost: Unpleasant for Chickens?

Weve started layering the coop bedding (cover poop with hay for 6 months, then clean out and put in compost pile). Coincidentally, my 6 chickens have started roosting on top of the coop at night. It could be the heat (91 today), but I wonder if having layered bedding in a small coop could make...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Seven eggs from our six Red Stars. It will be three weeks this Saturday since we brought them home. They have adjusted so well. Started laying a little over a week after we got them, and the number keeps getting larger. They are wonderful birds! ❤️

    Thick Egg

My Red Star (first egg) laid an egg that had a thick membrane, and it cooked up round and thick, very different from storebought. You can see in the pic the round one is it. Storebought is next to it. It was substantial and delicious, but is this normal?

    Anxious Chicken

Newbie here. I play Calming Chicken Music on YouTube for mine and they purr.

PLEASE HELP!! My chickens keep escaping the run and getting killed!

I'm new, but we connected chicken wire to the entire floor of the run (/dog kennel originally), connected it to the bottom of all 4 sides and covered it with ssnd.

    Frontyard Chicken Newbie in Florida

Hi! I just got six beautiful Red Stars a little over a week ago, and we had our first egg yesterday! We have a coop and run in our front yard :). I am officially a crazy chicken lady now. I LOVE my girls! They are named Madame Cha Cha, Lucy, Starshine, Mystic, and I'm saving two for my kids to...
