Official BYC Poll: Special Needs Poultry

I got 6 ISA browns two weeks ago and noticed a week ago that the smallest chick had her right foot out to 90 degrees and even backwards. She gets around pretty good by flapping her wings too. She has been eating and drinking well and even gets on a short roost I made for them in a small...

How do you store your feed/scratch?

I live on 18 acres in the woods. I store my chicken scratch and black sunflower seeds and crumbles in the bags they come in, but store them in large (35 gal?) plastic garbage cans with their lids. I have not had any any mice or other critters chew into them. They are inside a metal barn which...

    Feeding and Watering Struggles

I use these horizontal chicken nipples installed on a food grade white 5 gallon bucket. I prefer these with the wing nuts and silicone washers. In the winter I use a immersible electric water heater. If it gets below freezing then wrap the bucket with a few layers of bubble wrap (smaller...

    Hoop coop related question

Yes, I have seen that way of transporting without any problem. Do take rope to tie the ends together and also on the vehicle. Some folks just think "it will ride".

    Reputation of White Leghorn hens?

I highly recommend the ISA browns. They are the best layers and very large eggs. They are also a docile breed. Well, I have 7 ISA's and one RR. When I first got them I had 3 black australorp (sp), 3 barred rock, and two RR. They integrated well with some bullying from the barred rocks.

Help me decide: chicks or pullets?

The truth is small chicks are the cutest, but will require more care. Each chick or pullet will have it's own personality. Some will "tolerate" handling others not so much. I prefer getting pullets fully feathered out. The way to a chickens heart is through their stomach. I train them from...

Does anyone else herd their chickens?

When the chicks are still young or if I get new pullets I give them about three heaping tablespoons of just boiled white rice (NO salt), and call them repeating "chick , chick , chick, treats for the girls" . The trick is to train them to come when called and they see two plain white paper...

How to "free range" chickens now that bobcat is around?

As you can see the run is 25 feet wide and 50 feet long and everything is movable. Small coop was my first and I couldn't get in very well at my age so I built one I could actually stand in on top of a old boat trailer. I have only lost two chickens from a big hawk in the run. I have lost 4 or...

How to "free range" chickens now that bobcat is around?

I suggest that you try trapping that critter and give it a case of "lead poisoning". I understand they love skunk. First you will have to collect a roadkill skunk. You will need a bucket with a lid and plastic bag inside. Something disposable to collect it into the bucket. Something to hold...

    Hen gasping for air

https://www.aussiechooksupplies.com.au/blog/information-blogs/gapeworm-does-my-gasping-chicken-have-it/ I had a black Australorp hen that gasped for air and finally died I think this is what it was. She first started sneezing, and then went to gasping for air and was fine for awhile. you should...

Freshly cleaned coop - this does not makes sense to me....

You might also try peppermint oil. Make a spray of it and do the inside of the coop and all around. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003C54M9A?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details It is supposed to ward off insects and mice, etc. Google it. LOL and best of luck.

My Husky is killing my chickens and ducks, I need help!

Sorry but you can't be successful with most dogs and chickens/ducks. It is part of their canine heritage. That is why I have a barn cat she helps me get the eggs and they do not bother each other.

    Establishing Feral Chicken flock

I do not think it would work well where I am. I live in the woods and everything loves to eat chicken. Raccoons, O' possums, skunks, coyotes, wild feral dogs, feral pigs, panthers, and oh yeah snakes not to mention owls and hawks and the occasional eagle. Just saying.......even if you live in...

What would you put in your garden for poultry?

I decided to make one of these. I added a small aquarium pump and it works great!!

    Destroying my lawn

All chickens will decimate green areas (lawns). They need the greens to give color and flavor to their eggs, and they will make dirt bath areas and just scratch up dirt to look for insects. Your best bet is to fence off parts and rotate through. Welcome to raising chickens. LOL
