I started caring for chickens in the 2000s in the communal houses I was living in. I was so glad, because I had heard stories of my maternal Great Grandmother's chickens that she kept in Italy and then in Massachusetts when she immigrated to the US. Working with chickens felt like I was reclaiming some of my own heritage.
We wanted our own flock for many years, but we were too busy having our own rather large flock of children! In 2020, we realized we could wait no longer, and ordered some pullets and a rooster from a local woman.
I am glad that I had all those other experiences with poultry, but it was a totally different ballgame being the one solely responsible for their well being. I tried to traverse the learning curve as gracefully as I could, and this website (and most of the folks on it) helped immensely.
So, I am here, trying to steal whatever moments I can to help people struggling to care for their chickens, and sometimes just basking in the camaraderie of communing with people who don't think you are crazy for your passions. I try to help folks if I had the same experience, or if I have read about an issue from a knowledgeable person on here. Most of the articles on the internet are laden with misinformation, so I am really grateful for the folks on here that know about chickens from years of experience.
I am so glad that my kids are growing up learning how to care for poultry. It is a vital skill in my eyes.
First and foremost, for the love of chickens. Second, to help people. Third, to honor the those who have been helping people on here for years. Feeling close to people who live far away is also a great perk.
