So glad to hear your girl is all better! My lot are due a worming too but I tend to use ivermectin spot-on and then paraquatzel for gape and tapeworm a week after. Just find it easier to individually dose them. Haven't done it yet as they're still moulting and ivermectin has been implicated in...
You might find you only need to clip them once, if you can't determine her route. I had to clip one wing on my first roo as he was flying into next door's yard to eat daffodils (toxic to most animals). He was clearing a 7ft wall from ground level - not bad for a diminutive bantam cochin, not...
How's your baby doing today? Have you managed to get her back to the rest of the girls?
Glad to hear your boys are being respectful to the ladies.
Stan is much rougher with the girls than I'd like. Certainly much less gentle than Ferdy.
I think it’s to do with differences in their treatment by...
Sounds like treatment is going well! Great news ❤️
It's not cold here yet either -definitely colder though - but I've noticed that the back quarter inch of Ferdy's and Stan's combs are bluish first thing in the moring and just before bed. Once they get moving their combs are back to normal...
Poor girl!
Are you able to get superlorin implants in Australia? It's basically a contraceptive/hormonal implant that goes into the chicken's breast and stops them laying for anything up to 6 months.
They're actually designed for dogs but are pretty effective in giving hens a break from...
A bluish or purple tint to the comb can indicate issues with the cardiovascular system as it can show that there is insufficient blood oxygen.
However, your girl has a large comb so given the small amount of blue, it could just be that that part of the comb is cold, you know like how we can get...
It's a dominance thing. She's showing the other hens who's boss. When my Gladys was moving up the pecking order to become top hen, she did this often. She rarely does it now - although she sometimes mounts the boys if she feels the need to assert her authority 🤣
Poor boys! Fortunately I don't have any feather pickers. I do have a hen who will fight and stomp on my two boys for any perceived transgression. I love her, keeps the boys getting too big for their britches 😆
My Ferdy is an absolute pussy - he hasn't been out of the sheltered, covered run or the coop since he started moulting 😂
Everyone else is happily free-ranging. Even Pru and Clara who currently resemble naked necks rather than bantam cochins.
Welcome!
Sounds like you've been having great fun!
I only have 7 chickens (5 hens, 2 roos). Technically one more than our local authority allows.
But...6 of them are bantams so they only count as half a chicken each, right? 😂
