Thanks! I'm sure enough that she is a he that I changed her name from Miss Americana to Sarge. We have a leghorn rooster named "The Colonel" so Sarge seemed appropriate!
I'm sorry, I knew that's what you meant. I just wasn't sure how to say sexing based on patterns.
My mixes all had pea combs from their mother. They definitely take longer to show up, that's for sure!
I'm sure you're right. I was so hoping for a hen. 🤣
I have done pretty well. Just teeny tiny batches. One EE, one Gold Laced Wyandotte, one Lavender Orp, and 4 Brahmas. All allegedly pullets. But you know how that goes.
10 weeks, roughly. It's definitely not as red, and has almost no wattles compared to my RIR × OE roos were at this age.
I do not really trust the feather sexing for mixed up breeds. I know it's pretty dependable, but I don't fully trust it yet.
What up bird peeps!?
This spring's crop of chicks are growing up fast! I don't know how it is where yall are, but here in middle TN the TSC baby situation is ROUGH. They're only in small batches, and they're gone in 30 mins. It's like Pokémon. You gotta be quick.
Anyway, I managed to score one...
Checking back in. You would not believe how pretty these boys turned out! Absolutely no regrets about my winter breeding experiment. I do wish I had gotten at least one hen but that's OK! These F2 OEs are beautiful. Boniface has some purple feathers. Franc (Nee Francesca) has a bright red head...
I got two "olive egger" chicks last year, one had the cheeks, one had feathered legs. My Speedy Cheeks was indistinguishable from my Black Jersey Giants until they got to what I call their "Dinosaur Era" 🤣🤣 Now she has a full beard and cheeks. I hatched 3 of her babies this winter. All roosters...
THANK YOU. That is what I needed to hear. I've got her in the little baby brooder inside of the run. My newborns are still in the house and my teens moved out, so it was vacant. This way I KNOW she can't jump or move around too much. I also typically have the food and water hanging in there to...
My beautiful Jersey Giant, Betty, has sprained her knee. I'm very confident that it's a sprain. She won't quit getting up on the trampoline or the porch rails and jumping off. She is not a little Pullet anymore, but she doesn't realize she's a hefty girl! She is confined. I have food and water...
