Okay, thank you all for the reassurance! I'll hope you're all correct. - that's all we can do for a few more weeks anyways! LOL

Help confirming sex of barred rock chick

All of our chicks had white patches on their heads when we got them as day-olds. 😳

Help confirming sex of barred rock chick

This is Margaret. Or so I hope! She is the only one of our girls that is making me worry she might not be. I have read that boys have way more white than girls. And that their feet don’t have as much dark on them. She is overall a little lighter in color, but I think still more black than...

Sharing (badly drawn) plans of the coop/run we’re building!

The nesting boxes are built out and the roof of that section is done! It still needs a latch and also a method to hook it up on the wall while collecting eggs. We built the nesting boxes dividers to be removable for easier cleaning. Here’s a view of inside the coop showing how the nesting...

Yikes that’s scary! Can a hawk get through half inch hardware mesh? We will have to add something there if that is an issue.

Sharing (badly drawn) plans of the coop/run we’re building!

Thank you! The plan was to paint it all navy blue to match our house, but the old fence boards look so neat… We might still end up painting it later down the road. But for now we’ll just keep it as is!

Roosting bars installed today. We changed the plan a bit. They run the short distance of the coop, on the far end. There’s 2 four-foot bars mounted at the same height, with a ramp to assist getting up. Next on the list is to finish building out the nesting boxes.

Sharing (badly drawn) plans of the coop/run we’re building!

Update... here's some progress pics! Obviously lots of things are in various states of unfinished so it feels a bit like a hot mess. But it’s getting there!! 😆 I think he’s making fabulous progress. This is the view from our back deck. (We replaced our back door last summer, and are reusing...

Sharing (badly drawn) plans of the coop/run we’re building!

Okay we can probably reconfigure the roosts spacing! We have mainly barred rock which are large and we don’t want them to feel too crowded and avoid using the boxes. We can add curtains to the front if it seems like they want to feel even more enclosed. I told my husband we only needed 2...

Sharing (badly drawn) plans of the coop/run we’re building!

Thank you. The plan will be to also let them out to roam the yard in the spring & summer when we’re spending time outdoors. ☺️ But if they can’t be watched over they’ll be in their run. It might be “just the minimum” but our yard is only so big. Thankfully chicken math can’t happen at our house...

Sharing (badly drawn) plans of the coop/run we’re building!

Thank you! I just hope it all works out like we're planning. And we're on a time crunch because of course we got chicks before starting work on the coop LOL! They are 3.5 weeks old, so we still have time. My husband doesn't work so he has the entire workweek to make coop progress, we're not...

Sharing (badly drawn) plans of the coop/run we’re building!

Alright, I thought I’d share the plans we came up with for the coop we’re building. These are just my hand-drawn scribbles and absolutely nothing is to scale… but here they are! 😂 Built to house 6 chickens (although we currently have 7 chicks). We basically scoured the internet for weeks and...

Building First Coop - Some General Questions from a Newbie!

Yeah we're definitely going to be burying it under the dirt. I just didn't know if we needed stakes in addition to burying it. I guess we'll start with the dirt and see what happens - if it starts trying to pull up at some point, we'll add stakes.
