Comment by 'SoilMatesofGA' in article 'Factors that Influence & Affect Egg Laying'

I'm a newbie (just started with mine in late July, so hopefully someone else with more experience will chime in) and have noticed an increase in egg production when I stopped feeding garden scraps as often. One of mine got sick and someone here mentioned it could be because my feed wasn't...

    Sick Hen

I ended up not draining her. She's acting 100% normal again, except she hasn't leg a regular egg yet, but I've seen three soft ones over the past 10 days or so, as if she's still working out the kinks. I know one was hers and assume the other two were also since the rest are laying fairly...

    Sick Hen

Two days later and she looks like a different bird. She’s active again, foraging, drinking water, eating from the feeder, and her abdomen is a lot less swollen and less red. I don’t think she has layed an egg in the past four days, but something changed. My other RIR lays almost daily, so I...

    Sick Hen

One of my Rhode Island Reds is acting weird. She went to the nesting box yesterday, but didn’t lay. This morning she was in there for 90 min without laying and finally came down when I put out fresh water. She won’t eat, not even when I sprinkled meal worms nearby. She’s drinking water at least...

    Two soft-shelled eggs overnight??

Thank you! I bought them a few weeks ago when they were already laying and the folks who sold them to me said they were 13-14 months at the time. Most of their diet is complete feed, but I'm cutting back on the garden/food scraps for a few days to see if I see a difference. I have a bowl of...

    Two soft-shelled eggs overnight??

This is almost exactly what I was going to write regarding my girls molting pattern. I’ve only had mine for a few weeks and have been getting 3-4 perfect eggs every day from my 5 hens. I just found the remnants of soft shell and wonder if this was the first or I’ve been missing some onwhat I...

What kind of grass to grow?

I’m curious about the same grass question. I have my hens in a chicken tractor I move around my backyard. I’m on my first loop, but think I can space out the daily moves to make it take 3 weeks before I repeat a section. I had a mix of Bermuda, fescue, and weeds and now have a lot less of each...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I got 4 from my 5 hens. Today was my second full day with them (my first hens ever!). Got 4 yesterday too. So much fun to hear them cluck after laying so I know to go check.

    Horizontal PVC feeder height?

Thank you! That makes sense. Gravity always wins. 😁

    Horizontal PVC feeder height?

Thanks! I had read not to glue it, but didn’t realize I had to clean it monthly. I appreciate the tip!

    Horizontal PVC feeder height?

Thanks! It is a sweeping 90, just a bad angle for the pic. I had to go double check because I bought a regular 90 at first and thought I might’ve put the wrong one on. It doesn’t sweep as much as some I’ve seen out there, but is much better than a regular 90.

    Horizontal PVC feeder height?

I’m in the final stages of building my first chicken tractor (complete novice). How high should my feeder be? I haven’t glued or secured the PVC yet, so I can move it up or down easily. The top is about 8 inches from the ground now. Question 2: Should I tilt the horizontal tube more so the...

    Coop Door on the Floor

Thanks! That’s a good enough guideline. You don’t need to go measure.

    Coop Door on the Floor

I failed to mention, the coop portion will have a wire (hardware cloth) floor so their "fertilizer" can fall to my grass.
