I think I killed my favorite chicken

There's a good chance she was already dying when you tried to save her. Don't blame yourself, you tried to help. And you cared. It is hard to lose animals, sometimes just as hard as losing people. I just read a book called Talking with the Animals, by Patty Summers, who is a psychic and...

Eggs are white but used to be brown

When I have a broody that I don't want to hatch eggs, I put her in broody jail. It's a wire bottom cage which is in our basement. I learned about this here on BYC, many use this method. It takes 2-3 days/nights to break the broodiness. Then she goes back to normal.

Eggs are white but used to be brown

Broody hens don't usually lay eggs at all. They may not be hers. Are you sure she is broody? The Buff Orpington I had laid very light eggs. How old is she? I currently have a Sussex who is 8 yrs old and her eggs have become progressively lighter as she ages. They were light brown and are...

    Ended BYC's Springtacular Flower Photos

Each year we welcome random thistles that plant themselves in our yard. They are exotic, wildly beautiful, require no care, and they are butterfly magnets!

    Pellets or Crumbles

I have given all my chickens of all ages 20% all flock crumbles, and have used Kalmbach Flock Maker or Purina Flock raiser. They like the high protein feed, I think this is key. However, I got pellets by mistake and they ate it just fine. Gave them a choice, and there was no preference...

Best way to add to the flock

What breed(s) are your current hens? Have any ever gone broody? If one of your own flock hatches the chicks, then mama will take care of integrating them into the flock. Otherwise, integrating newcomers can be a challenge, know that your hens are not going to welcome them. You have to let...

5 broody hens and a new Momma!!

I have 2 broody jails (wire bottom cages) in my basement. It takes about 3 days + nights (sometimes just 2) to break our hens of broodiness. I don't let them stay broody, they will go to jail on day one. In the summers, we almost always have 1 or 2 hens in jail. One comes out, another goes...
