Sent feathers from two roos to Miami to be tested for the blue egg gene. They are both heterozygous so I can work with that. They are the best of last year’s hatch for temperament and phenotype. Now to build a breeding pen again. We saw crows running off a gray fox across the street a couple days ago so the makeshift breeding pen from last year would be too risky with F3s.

Pink egg project coming next year, I guess. Lol

Left is backcross to Welsummer and right is F2 I believe. (My original stock are Cream Legbars and Welsummers.)

Hardest part will be finding a boy to put them with so I’ll hold on to the bro of the BC and 2 of the F2 boys. My F1 boy died, but I do have the original bloomy hen and a buncha other F1 boyz.

Yesterday we took down a few dying trees in the run ahead of Hurricane Ian. A large one in particular was leaning toward the coop.

Now it’s like one of those hidden picture puzzles. Lol How many chickens can you spot?

Pretty girl should start laying any day now. We have too many in this batch to name, and we are overrun with boys still who need to go to freezer camp.

First time we hit a dozen eggs in a day! And it was this beauty! Really need to confirm who is laying this one. It’s been hard to catch them in the act lately with the mother hen growling at everyone including me. Lol

Our first broody. Well, another one started sitting first and then this one bullied her out of the nest enough that it broke her of it, so now this one gets the task of managing the hatchlings. Lol It’s seriously adorable. Expecting to wake up to a couple more still.

Got our first non-blue layer from the backcross to Welsummer. I knew half statistically would not lay blue/green but I actually really love this brown with white bloom. Maybe I will go for a pink egg project, which arguably is much more complex/more guesswork due to the nature of “pink” eggs. I still have no idea at all as to who is laying what out of the 9 at POL.
