Hen sits on eggs like shes broody then stops

There is such a thing as incomplete broodiness, where a hen will display broody behaviors to a degree, but not be fully broody and committed. I have one like that, she's really confusing (and confused). The thing is, chickens are SO far removed from what nature intended, that they've lost a...

Layer feed or all flocks for non-mixed flock?

It says it, but not clearly. Layer feeds are usually labelled as such on the front of the package. This one says absolutely nothing about layer/calcium on the front. The extra calcium information is only buried among the "details" on the back. That's misleading.

Layer feed or all flocks for non-mixed flock?

Oh interesting! That's a lot of calcium for a feed that's not labeled as layer... Potentially dangerous if fed to non-laying chickens long term. I guess one can't trust the labels and has to check everything...

    Favorite All Flock feed?

Aart's DIY feeder - the best! (RIP aart).

Can I treat my flock with this?

Feed them medicated feed (with added Amprolium) - that's the preventative against coccidiosis. Amprolium teaches their bodies to fight cocci on their own. You haven't added your location though so I don't know if feed medicated with Amprolium is available in your area, but that's what you should...

Layer feed or all flocks for non-mixed flock?

This is not a layer feed though. They were asking about layer feeds. This is a feather fixer feed which has higher protein to rebuild feathers, it's not a layer feed with added extra calcium. I'd be curious to see an 18-20% layer feed, too, as they tend to be lower in protein. But an actual...

    Favorite All Flock feed?

Purina's is either "All Flock" or "Layer", there's no "All Flock Layer".

    Favorite All Flock feed?

I've been using Purina Flock Raiser exclusively for many years and am very happy with it. I have a no-waste feeder so I use the crumble version (chickens tend to prefer crumble to pellet). It's uniformly ground so they can't pick out favorite pieces. And it's 20% protein, which is great for all...

Does this comb and waddle belong to a roo?

It’s too early to look for feather differences. That comb and wattles are your giveaway. This is a boy.

    BYC Member Interview - K0k0shka

Thank you! Yes, I have a kid sized garden rake, leaf rake, and broom, and use them in the coop - so much easier to reach tight spaces and turn around, when you don't have a big long handle banging on everything! And yes, the big fat one is a Silver Laced Orpington, and her co-parenting partner...

    BYC Member Interview - K0k0shka

Yep, that's my Christmas rooster! He sat on top of the run for a few years, but I figured I don't get to see him much out there because I'm not in the back near the chickens after dark, when the lights are the prettiest. So eventually I moved him to the front of my house, right by the front...

    Extra toe

People have chosen to keep many mutations and defects in breeds for some odd reason, and keep breeding for them - like extra toes, misshapen feathers, holes in the skull, etc. all because they think it "looks cool", without a thought for what that means for the bird itself and its quality of...

Oh no, I didn’t know about aart! What a loss for the community. She shared so much wisdom and knowledge over the years. RIP aart! 💔

    Temperature shock question

Yeah I'm only doing the underside anyway, and it's REALLY hard to get the feathers themselves actually wet - they are so good at doing their waterproofing job (when you don't want them to...)

    Temperature shock question

It's hot. We broke some records in my area today, crossing 100 degrees, and my chickens have been miserable. Along with the standard cooling tricks, this year I decided to try something different - I filled a plastic bin with water, and dunked each chicken in it, midday when it was the hottest...

What time of day is best? chicks under broody hen

I agree that it's better at night (or in the evening) so they have more quiet time together to bond. Especially if the chicks aren't freshly hatched, but a couple of days old already. Freshly hatched chicks will stay under her all day even if it's not dark outside, but at a couple of days they...

Things you wish you could say

This is another thing I find sad. We are being labeled "cranky" (or self-label as "cranky") for expecting basic decent treatment from others... That's not right.

Things you wish you could say

Me three. I also really hate it when staff at schools or hospitals call me "mom" when I'm with my kids. I'm the kids' mom, not your mom, and "mom" is not my name, so WTF? But if I say something about it, even if politely, then I'm being difficult or unappreciative of their friendliness 🙄

Picture Of The Week (POW) Information & Submissions

Is it okay if my picture is from a couple of years ago? Still taken by me, the chickens in it are still alive, and I haven’t entered it in any contests. I just really love this photo of them 😁 Two Lemon Cuckoo English Orpington sisters showing off the fluff 💛

I thought these were supposed to not waste food

I've never understood the logic of these feeders and how they are supposed to be low waste. There's nothing to keep the feed in, it's just a bunch of big holes. I tried making one myself, with PVC elbow joints - total waste of effort, the chickens would just rake the feed out with their beaks...
