Official BYC Poll: What Is Your Least Favorite Thing About Keeping Chickens?

There is one thing I hate the most that isn’t on the list. Dealing with the surplus cockerels. For me personally this is after a natural hatch. But other possibilities to obtain only female chicks are just as bad. Only in another way. The surplus male chicks/cockerels get killed in the...

    BDutch's bantam flock & natural breeding projects #5 🪺 🪺 and #6

Today is a lot better! I sure hope so too. When I let the chickens free range and filled up an empty bowl and gave clean water. Ini mini came down from the nestbox area. I cleaned out ‘Tintins’ nestbox and made a good nest for the broodies. Then I put Black outside to eat and drink. Laid the...

Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

In our NRC news, just to share about Animal behaviour.: Biologists, with the help of computers, have found strong evidence that African elephants can call each other by name. African elephants also seem to have a call sign. In the wild, animals address each other with a specific, personal...

    BDutch's bantam flock & natural breeding projects #5 🪺 🪺 and #6

I had no good opportunity to candle the hatching eggs from under the broodies yesterday morning. Added just one from the incubator. And kept the incubator going. I was not happy yesterday evening when I got home at 18 h. One of the broodies pooped in the nest. I have several dirty eggs now...

I was curious about the product and looked on the (mainly dutch) internet for mire info. I could order the fermented Pu-er too. I will do another search for you and see if you can order in the UK too.

    MJ's little flock

Maybe Katie misses her flock mates very much. Is there a way to have her in sight of the flock in a separate cabin/prefab/run during the day? I think it would be great for her mental health to be around her flock mates again.

    Failed Broody Hen

Congrats with at least one chick. If the broody and chick are within sight of the flock , integration shouldnt be very difficult. But I wouldn’t put them together until the chick(s) is at least a week old and a bit stronger. I don’t have any experience with a broody that was completely out of...

Théo and the chickens des Sauches

I have been reading on a respectable Dutch site (levende have) that adding hemp seed (singing bird seed) to the feed , helps the chickens to lay through the winter. You need to add it from late autumn until februari. I tried it once. Maybe it helped a little, but it wasn’t like a miracle...

    New to this!

Sorry to hear he is so unwell. But your flock will survive without a rooster too. And from his offspring you might have a good rooster again in a year or 2.

Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I had more trouble with separated hens than with co-brooders or co-mama’s. The separated hens (2x) who waited for their own chicks pecked on chicks of the other hen who hatched nearby. The first time I relocated the broody with the eggs. The second time I gave the eggs to the broody with one...

Am I crazy for wanting to sell my whole flock

Sometimes there are people who love to attend chickens / livestock who cant keep them themselves because they live in apartment or in a village with restrictions. (See Shadrach allotment ex-bat thread...

Am I crazy for wanting to sell my whole flock

Another idea: sell /give away most chicks after the broody abandoned them (often 5-10 weeks old) and keep the number of chickens to a manageable size. Possibly. I never had them. But if chickens don’t like them they might search another ‘nest’. Someone has to check at least 2x a week imho...

Am I crazy for wanting to sell my whole flock

I agree with Texasblues. Chicken keeping can be easy with a good coop, good run and a auto-pop door. The chickens go into the coop by themself around sunset. If the auto pop door is adjusted right on lumen. They will all be safely locked up inside the coop. In the morning the pop door opens...

Gender Guess- 3 week light sussex has me stumped

I sure hope its a pullet. But Im not 100% convinced she is because of the bantam Sussex chicks I had last year. The male chick was clear very early because the breeder knew the colouring. But he developed very slow in relation to the male Vorwerk and Dutch I had too. Almost 12 weeks old...
