Or… handle the chick like once every day. Give some water with electrolytes to start with. Stop if you see the chick is not comfortable with you.
Friendly handling and giving food is important if you don’t want it to become a chicken that will be afraid of you.
Fingers crossed it’s a girl. 🤞
Tintin on his own now. @abpatchy I wonder if its normal that Sulmtalers don’t roost. This is the first time I have a chick that doesn’t roost at all. Not during the day and not in the night.
He is almost 11 weeks old now. His mother finally abandoned him last Monday. Tintin stayed behind in the...
I believe I see two boys. Left and middle. The chick on the right isn't very clear, bc the comb is very pale. I do hope it’s a girl.
Supercute picture btw. You should enter it for the 2025 calendar competition @Shadrach !
The broodies are doing great in the 2 nestboxes whole day.
Around sunset Tintin thought he could sleep in his usual spot, so I took him out and put him in the tiny coop with the auto door and locked him up inside.

When I went to check at 23.00 h , he was back in his usual nest-box ...
@Sequoia Raven Bird Farms
"How many chickens will you have when you stop?"
Some possible answers could be:
- 0
- too many
- not enough
- much more without chicken math
🙄
There is one thing I hate the most that isn’t on the list.
Dealing with the surplus cockerels.
For me personally this is after a natural hatch. But other possibilities to obtain only female chicks are just as bad. Only in another way. The surplus male chicks/cockerels get killed in the...
Today is a lot better!
I sure hope so too. When I let the chickens free range and filled up an empty bowl and gave clean water. Ini mini came down from the nestbox area. I cleaned out ‘Tintins’ nestbox and made a good nest for the broodies. Then I put Black outside to eat and drink. Laid the...
In our NRC news, just to share about Animal behaviour.:
Biologists, with the help of computers, have found strong evidence that African elephants can call each other by name.
African elephants also seem to have a call sign. In the wild, animals address each other with a specific, personal...
I had no good opportunity to candle the hatching eggs from under the broodies yesterday morning. Added just one from the incubator. And kept the incubator going.
I was not happy yesterday evening when I got home at 18 h. One of the broodies pooped in the nest. I have several dirty eggs now...
@Perris
Even found 2 UK addresses to buy Pu-erh tea cake :
https://www.theteamakers.eu/products/raw-pu-erh-cake
https://www.eteaket.co.uk/product/chinese-puerh-beeng-cha-357g-tea-cake/
I was curious about the product and looked on the (mainly dutch) internet for mire info. I could order the fermented Pu-er too. I will do another search for you and see if you can order in the UK too.
Maybe Katie misses her flock mates very much. Is there a way to have her in sight of the flock in a separate cabin/prefab/run during the day?
I think it would be great for her mental health to be around her flock mates again.
Congrats with at least one chick.
If the broody and chick are within sight of the flock , integration shouldnt be very difficult. But I wouldn’t put them together until the chick(s) is at least a week old and a bit stronger.
I don’t have any experience with a broody that was completely out of...
I have been reading on a respectable Dutch site (levende have) that adding hemp seed (singing bird seed) to the feed , helps the chickens to lay through the winter. You need to add it from late autumn until februari.
I tried it once. Maybe it helped a little, but it wasn’t like a miracle...
Sorry to hear he is so unwell. But your flock will survive without a rooster too. And from his offspring you might have a good rooster again in a year or 2.
Hope your rooster will be fine.
