For some reason, a basement doesn't bother me. Maybe because the first house I lived in had a basement, and that was the kids' play area. I've been in basements my whole life, in just about every place I lived.
But a cave... uh... no, I couldn't do it. I don't know what the difference is.
Put the functionality on the inside where it helps you tend the chickens. Put the cute on the outside where you can see it. I guarantee, the chickens won't notice it anyway.

We're on a river too, but it's about 80-90 feet below us. We had a "100 year flood" a few years ago, but had no issues here. A lot of people were not as lucky.
