My drakes are nuts right now, but this happens every spring. Usually I separate them with small fences. I have 4 boys in one pen, usually I separate them, runners on one side and pekin on the other. For whatever reason, my pekin are going at each other, so they're separated from each other...
Thanks @Miss Lydia ! I have been a bit absent from this site, and have missed you guys too! I was hanging with Webster and Bandit today and it reminded me of how I found him on here. I hope all is well with you.
Update on Webster the call duck.
Last year his girlfriend Ruby died. Before she went she hatched two KC pekin cross ducks! Pippin and Louis are just like mum! Skittish and spastic. We did get a female mallard who is the new love of Webster’s life, Bandit.
They reside in a chicken coop, that...
Runners are awesome! The two that I have were unwanted drakes I got off cragslist. You don't need to get them in pairs. I'd get three, ducks always need a duck friend so that way if something happens to one you'll still be ok.
You should get all females if you want to keep them with your...
What do you plan on using them for? Mine are all pets. Personally I think I'd avoid heavy weight breeds like Pekin. They have more foot/leg problems, I think.
If I was to start all over I'd probably stick with runners, and call ducks. They're super cute and can be pretty tame if you get...
I just took the fence down between my Pekins and my runners. All four are drakes. They've stopped fighting for the most part. They have little scuffles but overall they're pretty calm now.
Females can see them off. I have a mallard that the boys freak out over when she walks by. Water can do it too. I have 2 brothers who fight only in the pool!
Sounds like your drakes way more aggressive than mine. The fence in my primary pen is made of hardware cloth, so they can’t touch each other. I do hear their bills scraping along the hardware cloth though!
My runners, and pekins are seperate by the fence. Birds of a feather flocking together if...
I had the exact problem with my 2 adopted pekin. I separated them from March to August with a fence they can see through. It's made of hardware cloth with wood, so it doesn't have sharp edges. They can see, but not touch.
The second year I ended up with 2 runner drakes. I was expecting to...
Move slowly, like others said. Give treats, and don’t change your appearance too much. My ducks are adults and still freak out if I enter their pen with my sweatshirt hood on my head! So I get very wet when it rains. Give them time, they’ll warm up to you.
This is so true. Please realize that this was not your fault. As you move forward remember how much you cared for her, and continue to enjoy your other ducks. I've had a few go to ducky heaven, I try to take peace in the fact that I've given them the best life possible.
My pekin drakes fought each other the first spring I had them. I separated thrm with a small fence. I added 2 runner drakes thinking I’d just make another wall and have 4 spaces. Turns out birds of a feather flock together. They have formed 2 teams, so I separate pekins from the runners and...
Drakes are so kooky! My drake flock recently has been a little nippy, which is rare in winter. Due to a broody kahki last summer I have my pekin boy and girl living with 2 young drakes. So far so good, but I know hormones will kick in in spring and they’ll have to be separated.
I use dog...
I agree bread is bad, but I would use it if you want to trap them. I tried to help a duck with a fishing lure in his mouth. Never was able to catch him though. I brought the ducks mealworms, peas and other healthy snacks. They didn’t eat it because they had no idea what it was.
