"I will sacrifice a day or two's collection, and once my Girls see their eggs left in a spot, they lay there without fail - HollyDuckFarmer."
How long do you leave their eggs in that
spot?
I have learned that, when I collect the
eggs that I find, the ducks look for another
place to lay...
And, thank you everyone for your help...
someone else wrote that the females
seem to have a more orange-y bill
and the males, a more olive bill.
I've yet to successfully vent sex any....
If I trusted what I've found so far, they'd
all be female :)

Buck, you worded my question far more
clearly than I - Thank you :)
and, I didn't know about the ZZ and WZ
chromosomes for birds...
Except for humans, I don't think that any
creature gives a hoot about the gender of
the offspring :)
Karen
Well, in humans, the sperm determines
the gender of the offspring...(a whole
long science class on X and Y
chromasomes)
in chickens, the HEN determines the
gender....
I wondered if the same was true in ducks
Question: Who determines the gender of
the offspring.... drake or hen?
and, is it likely OR, even certain, that whichever
one does the determining, they'd ALWAYS
create the same gender?
The reason I ask.... I have two males and two
females.... and one of the males has laid claim
to both...
We have a bunch of babies that are now
approximately 2 months old.....
the thing I notice first is that the tops of
their heads are turning green.... this is
REALLY evident in the sunlight.
I have 4 ducks.... I think that they are Rouens
Was told that they are Mallards
anyway - two hens and two drakes and one
drake constantly chases the other away...
(all of the ducks are almost a year old)
Only one drake is actively inseminating the ladies
and, only one hen has laid any...
I have 7 ducks that I was told were
Mallards....
3 are male and only two have the
white band on the neck...but only
part way around.... doesn't go
behind the head...
is that another characteristic of
a Rouen?
my boys look much like the images
above...
thanks
I had three separate areas and one roo per....
two of the areas were adjacent and, after awhile,
I opened it up and allowed all of the birds to roam
together...
One of the roos was at least twice the size of
the other with more personality than any roo
ought to have ;)
He immediately...
Thank you so much for all of this info....
Actually, the top image is what my roo
looked like for two days
these poor babies look very sad... I hate
when my birds are hurt or sick ;(
I'm pretty sure that my roo is suffering
a blow to his ego.... or something to
that effect.....
he's been...
I recently moved 5 birds from one coop into the
new, enlarged chicken/duck run...
the 5 birds - 4 hens and a roo - have been kept
separate - yet able to see and "interact" with the
rest of the flock for about a week.
Yesterday, I opened the door so that the 5 could
come out in the run...
last year, my birds were stressed... can't remember
what was going on at the time...
one by one, one after the other (one would stop and
another would start) the birds where wheezing...
making rattling sounds in their throats...
I'd bring them into the house and fed them water
mixed with oil...
Hi KittyKatKayl
I'm definitely NOT an expert... and, I have been raising
birds for about 6 or 7 years....
I would keep your injured bird separate until she is
healed....if you have a way to block an area of the
coop off and still let the birds see one another,
that works, too.
or, (don't...
I've been wondering this as well.....
I've had chickens for about 4 or 5 years and
recently added some ducks... (30+ chickens
and a few roos and 8 ducklettes 4-12 weeks old)
right now, they are each in their own coops/
runs but I'm in the process of combining and
enlarging the area
the...
My husband built two coops and did not
add nesting boxes so, I bought grey
totes from Walmart, turned them lid side
down and cut a small-ish opening in
one side....
at times, I will find 3 birds crammed into
them ;)
the main thing I like about this set up is
that I can take the lid off and...
I've had chickens for about 5 or 6 years now...
at the moment, there are at least 30 hens
and 4 or 5 roos....
My in-laws gave me 40-50 duck eggs over
the Summer - to hatch for them... and then,
they decided that they didn't want them...
I now have 8 ducklettes ;) - ranging in age
from 4...
What did the materials cost and how long
did it take to build this setup?
it looks great...like it will do a marvelous
job...
and... it's functional, not pretty... (I LOVE
functional, don't much care about the pretty)
what I'm about to write are just the thoughts
that popped into my head...
I have a couple of beautiful roos..
if I could convince them to fly over, you could
have one.... ;)
One is a New Hampshire Red
and another is a cross with New Hampshire
Red roo and Black SexLink.... absolutely
BEAUTIFUL feathers/colour
I'm about 5 1/2 hours from you - in Huntsville, AR
