We live on a cul-de-sac and there is just nowhere to put the snow after the plow clears the area. I have a temporary mailbox in a sand bucket that I drag out into the street so I can have mail delivered. It is going to take forever for the snowbank to melt.
Interesting happening this week. I let the girls out of their coop into their pen which has a layer of straw to keep them happy. As I was switching out the waterer, I heard a squeak and a brief commotion among the girls that drew my attention. I turned my head just in time to see them fighting...
The chickens are increasing their egg production! I put a call out to my blogger friends to see if they would be willing to share recipes and uses for excess eggs that I could post to my blog. I ended up with over 60 recipes. I thought I would share the link here in case anyone is looking for...
MEMama, I am so sorry that someone was so nasty to you. There is a way to express your opinion and a way to be downright mean. Since I am new to chickens, I read a lot about them. Unfortunately there is a lot of disagreements among people who call themselves experts in chicken rearing. They...
The January thaw was nice wasn’t it? Now we are back to another cold snap. I waited until it warmed up a little today to let the girls out. The coop stayed pretty comfortable overnight with the ceramic bulb. The flowerpot heater sounds like a good alternative too.
My GL Wyandottes are both so...
It looks like a little frostbite to me. Unfortunately, a couple of my chickens got a touch of frostbite too during the last cold snap. I did a lot of researching and looked at a lot of photos to confirm. From what I have read, just leave it alone and the damaged parts will fall off eventually...
When my Easter Egger laid for the first time, I was surprised to find two warm eggs in the nest box. I am positive it was her because none of the others were laying at the time and she is the only one who lays blue eggs. I did some research and it is possible.
All of a sudden this week there is...
Thanks! The Barred Owl was amazing to see and photograph. He didn't pay much attention to the girls as I enticed them into the safety of the coop with sunflower seeds and closed them in early for the night. Now that the bird feeder is gone, I hope the owl doesn't think my flock is food. I know...
I closed the chickens up in their coop a little early when I saw this fella stalking the bird feeder earlier this week. I guess we will have to stop feeding the wild birds for a while.
Update: Here we are at week 26 and the lovely light colored EE, now named Pinot (short for Pinot Grigio), has laid her first egg. It is a beautiful cream egg. Thanks to this thread, I knew a single combed EE would probably lay a pink or cream colored egg.
Sitting in the nest box.

That is twice the amount I plant each year. I use most to make jarred tomato sauce and salsa plus seed for the following year. Then I usually have enough for a year of casual cooking use. You should have plenty of garlic next year :)
I never thought of this and love the idea. I will need to rake some up and add to the run before the snow falls. I use pine straw to mulch the paths in my garden and it does dry quickly after rain. The chickens will have so much fun digging through it.
Thanks! I think you are correct. She was very stressed out that day too. It was obvious she was uncomfortable and stressed out. What a surprise to find two. Hopefully she will settle into a regular routine soon.
I read more on this here. I was so surprised. She laid another egg today. Just one and she seemed much less stressed out so hopefully things will become routine for her soon.
