Hi all, Regarding recycled coops: a friend made a fantatic coop from the fram of a swing set. She covered it completey in chicken wire, using one triangle side to covert to a door-that would be the complicated part. It can then be moved (with 2 people lifting) every few weeks.
Loving the photos!
Hi Hatched2,
There are NO stupid questions. Boody mum will always do a better job than an incubator as long as WE do not interfere too much (touch and move eggs).
Teila- chicks are doing GREAT-remind me what breed or X they are? Have you tried the boiled egg treat yet? They LOVE it!
Hi Teila,
I have always provided my mum and chicks with treats and often lived in places (PNG) where chick starter was non existent. While providing chick starter, it is great to offer treats during your "visit tme". Take the treats in and sit down with the family. Pick up the little ones and...
Hey Rachel, Year 11 pretty good excuse for little contact. It is MUCH worse than Yr 12 or certainly used to be 100 years ago when I did it.You must be on a property from amount of poultry you have. Post some pics once the dreaded school year over. Good Luck
Look Aussie, get some "CHOOKS" and call them chooks like any good OZ guy.Chooks are a part of Aussie life- retain your heritage-get chooks!!! (is that ok Blair? LOL)
I have had pure bred sussex in NQ with no problem with heat. I have in the past had purbred plymouth & RIs red. The Plymouth are HUGE but also docile. However personally, I LOVE the Pekin or Pekin X. Excellent brooders, very gentle, friendly & do not tend to roam too far when free ranging. In...
I have
HENS= one aracana, 1 Rhode Is x sussex, 1 x plymouth x sussex, 3 x pekin (cochin) bantams/ 3 pekins hens bred from my crew
Roosters+ my beloved 12 yr old cochin(pekin)/ 5 cochin boys I bred & 1x AracaunaX cochin I bred= 16 in total which is why the extension was built. Cochins are called...
hi to everyone, been ages since I have been on.
ON the age issue-
OLIVER- is 12 years old, Cochin with a touch of tar brush. He is showing NO signs of age. His sister wife-died at 10. I recently bred him to my cochn girl because I wanted his line to go one. I got 3 hens and 6 roosters!!! I plan...
Guys, I really think if we do not get ALL Ozzies on one thread we are never going to have all the brains we need in one place? Can we not somehow combine the two Australian threads? Will put same post in other one. I just want us all together as there are too few of us.
I think like other bantams , anywhere between 4 1/2 -6 months. I don't have silkies but my other bantams & large breeds have really varied between these times. It is good to keep them in the coop (no free ranging) once they reach the 4mth age so you ensure first & following eggs are laid where...
Hi Chic a dee -post some photos of your sqishy 5. I am just having to extend my coop as I have 7 adults & now NINE new chicks (5 I incubated plus 4 mum brooded- she then stole mine!! and is a brilliant mum). Altho mine mainly free range, I need the option to lock up all week if required. My...
Yay, you will love QLD. Make sure your new coop is snake proof. I just caught another one last night but she was only small so had done no damage. I just released her at the back of my property.
Oh my gosh, fantastic set up. Great to have another "rural" Aussie on board. Our city Aussies are really inteesting with the different things they face. I really wish there was one spot on this site for an Australian thread. From North Qld- Lets all keep talking
