I don't argue either, that's why I've lived this long!:old We have a tendency to get too close to these babies. By the time one of those little chicks was found out to be a rooster, they'd be named, loved, and pampered - plus we would have a video archive of their first steps, first flight...
We did use the dog crate method, but it had a plastic tray covering the bottom. We put a little straw in there, with food and water, and even put in a perch. She laid in front of the fan which had a bowl of ice in front of it, for three days. She did get up on the perch, but moved back and laid...
We have a Black Americana hen (name Rietta), 3-4 years old, who went broody on the 14th. We put her in the time out cage in the garage on the 16th and kept her there 4 days. She looked like the broodiness broke, so we put her back outside with the flock. She hasn't laid an egg since the 15th and...
Is the discharge white and bubbly/runny? If it is Salpingitis the discharge could be an ovaduct infection - which needs to be immediately treated with an antibiotic. From what I've read, it can be either virus or fungal infection. Please contact @Wyrop Rock.
Sue, does she have a bad smell from the discharge? If it's Salpingitis (lash egg) she may be laying leathery misshappened eggs, or two in one day. If you go to my posts, I just had information concerning these same symptoms. @Wyrop Rock is an expert, and advised me on my hen. You may want to...
Good morning @Tookie and @Wyrop Rock. My initial evaluation of Lucy's condition of vent gleet was partially made because of a sickening smell in our coop/run areas. Many articles said that vent gleet causes a terrible smell, which I had noticed, but could never isolate to any one chicken. This...
WR, I wanted to let you know that Lucy passed. According to a YouTube video I just watched she had Salpingitis, as you suggested. The rubbery/leathery egg, stopped laying, listless, not herself. We did try to give her ACV in her water when she was isolated in the garage, but don't think she...
I agree with aart, any fencing with openings larger than 1/2" is not going to keep raccoons from reaching through and catching one of your chickens. Yes, they make chicken wire with 1"-1 1/2" openings, but it won't prevent predators from grabbing your chicks. 1/2" hardware cloth all around is...
1/2" galvanized hardware all around sides and top. Skirt around the bottom with 1'-1 1/2' flat on the ground to prevent digging. That will assure no predators can get in. I have seen a snake be able to slither through the 1/2" HC, so if there is a danger of snakes put a 1' - 2' run of 1/4"...
