I have enjoyed reading about your chicken tending journey. What an interesting breed! This was a new one for me. I have never heard of them. Beautiful birds ❤️
It has grown, as have they, and I have loved having them. Who knew “just chickens” could bring so much joy. They really are so much more than that aren’t they?
My ankle has a fair bit of hardware in there holding it together but it is pain free for the time being and with some luck it will stay...
I will share :)
I was eagerly (impatiently) anticipating the arrival of my first chicks when I unexpectedly broke my ankle. In search of advice, reassurance, and a way to pass the time, I stumbled upon BYC and began reading BY Bob's thread from the beginning.
What I discovered was a...
I am sorry, this must be a royal pain in the tail feathers!
Plus side (if there is one) you have created a space that suits them so well they want very much to raise their babies there. ❤️
A few photos:
These guys are allowed to roost at night and exist in the coop but the flock will not allow them out in the run or outside with them 😔. Makes it difficult to get good photos of them but they are alive and well and growing fast.

Speaking of the synopsis!
To anyone and everyone here, who loves this thread. We are always recruiting and could use a few new volunteers to take a week or two here and there.
The core team takes turns and it ends up being a once a month commitment but with more people this could be...
Coming home yesterday and I saw one of these hanging out around the edge of our property near where my chickens free range.
The wing span was just enormous. Beautiful bird but also scary. It seems to have the area and thankfully left the chickens alone.
Oh goodness, oops! Mr P is beautiful too. It's not his fault that the girls think he is so cute that they all want one of his feathers to put in their hats. 🙊👒
It is so hot and humid here today and likely for the rest of the week as well. I went out to the coop to add more waterers and to take down the chicks tent as well since they seem to be roosting up with the bigs for the last week.
The bigs refuse to let the tweens come out of the coop and into...
I can share my experience. Brownie is the head girl here. Whenever she got off the nest the other hens would pick on her and try and start stuff. Brownie fought back and just went back to sitting. I mention this only to say I was surprised they did it to her given her Queen status within my...
Yeah, I am really liking the idea tbh. The pole barn approx 24ft x 48ft and is currently not being used for anything. It is all dirt floor though. I am thinking of making 2 8x8 coops that have separate runs side by side. The coops would have a floor raised up about a foot off the ground. Each...
The coop we have was made by rehabbing a very old shed that was falling apart. I took the best half of it and made a wall in the middle of it. It has a dirt floor and many gaps in the old wood siding. I have tried to sure up gaps and the whole thing has a hardware cloth predator skirt made of...
The three I have left are allowed to roost and are considerably larger than the Orps were. Much faster growing breed. I think they will be okay honestly. The Orps wouldn’t go to roost yet especially Ryka with her lack sight in one eye.
I have put in a call for a quote on getting a new coop and...
So sad, I lost Ryka last evening. She is just gone no sign of her anywhere.
I need to revamp my coop and run before adding or hatching anymore chicks though. Clearly they are not safe out there. :( The grow-ups have no problems but sadly the chicks definitely do.
