Hello, thank you for your replies!
We'll look into getting some Cosequin - my parents have a glucosamine with MSM for dogs (older dog with arthritis) treat but it has too high of a dosage, is chicken flavored, and has far too many other ingredients that I don't feel would be good for a duck.
Hello, I would like to ask for help to treat an "older" injured duck. She is a large cayuga/pekin cross, 9 years old, and I believe otherwise healthy (lays eggs in summer months, eats and drinks, etc). She belongs to my parents and I do not live there anymore but I am visiting and will try to...
Don't worry too much. Ducks have insane laying habits. Sometimes I'll let them out in the morning and they're halfway down the ramp and plop an egg out on the spot!
As long as they look and act healthy, it's normal for them.
In that case I would personally rehome the aggressive drake - alternatively you would need to add a lot more females. If he's aggressive like this at 8 weeks he has the chance to become an even worse nightmare when his hormones kick in.
Chickens are pretty mean to their injured flock mates...
It would probably be best to keep her in an area where she can't use her leg to allow it to heal without straining it too much.
And 8 week old drake is too young to mate, but it could be the shock of being attacked may have resulted in some kind of diarrhea-ish reaction. I would definitely...
My family keeps ducks and chickens in the same run, but they both have separate coops. I'm an oddball that prefers the ducks over the chickens and if I had to pick just one, I'd pick the ducks. I rarely have any issues with fighting, and usually that's just when I add new birds to the flock that...
Hopefully this is okay here since the cockerel in question is a mixed breed... but it's about his comb. His father - also a mixed breed - had a single comb. The mother is either a Rhode Island Red or one of our peacombed easter eggers (leaning toward the EE personally).
His brothers all had...
Oh yeah he's going strong. Sassy is his favorite girl. He was so upset (which is why I was aware something was wrong). Should've seen his face when he saw me carrying her back.
7 Roosters and the fox goes for one of the 5 ducks.. sheesh.
Oh boy it's been a long couple months.
Good news: Opie is walking around and enjoying spring. He's even mated a few times (in the pool). He has NOT gotten worse.
His legs haven't 'really' gotten better, either. They are misshapen and he doesn't get around as easily as he used to. Big knees...
Let's preface by saying owls are very common where I live, but have never gone for our chickens prior to now despite having hunted in our yard for the past 6 years (as long as we've had chickens). I love owls and their calls. But this winter has been cold and icy and a lot of the prey has been...
My mom (the one who went in and saw it fly over her head to get out of the coop) said it looked like a Great Gray Owl. It was a bit of a weird thing, though. Winter is dragging, all the usual prey (squirrels, mice, etc) has disappeared. The owl was very thin. Poor thing was desperate. Haven't...
Personally I love roosters. But every rooster is different, with a wide variety of behaviors and reactions. Some are more useful than others.
The first Roo I had was a RIR Rooster given by a friend who couldn't have roos in his neighborhood. He was far too aggressive with both his hens and us...
Hello, just to update: the coop is very secure. Once they're locked in they're pretty much safe from everything except a human or a bear... the fenced run, on the other hand...
No sign of them last night. No glowy eyes. One of the young hens got scared by a piece of falling tin and flew the...
The chicken coop is a renovated haulable-camper. Nothing but chickens and ducks under it during the day. They're probably trying to find a weak spot to get in or just thinking they won't get noticed. I'm keeping an eye out but the little guys haven't returned.
I will pass on to my family to not...
I wouldn't want to relocate and risk having them slaughter someone else's chickens. I don't enjoy the thought of killing animals but if they don't leave on their own that's the only option to protect my ducks and chickens. The coops are safe, can't say so much about the run given the condition...
I don't live at home anymore. My dad said he got home late (unexpectedly) last night. It was after dark. He saw a raccoon exit the chicken coop and disappear. All birds accounted for and uninjured.
Today I'm home for holidays and just decided to shine a flashlight out like I used to. Saw some...
I drove home in a snowstorm in a 2 wheel drive, no snow tire vehicle. That was fun. Opie has about as much traction in the snow as I did, which is to say.. he can't walk in the snow. His poor little bow-legged legs simply slip out to both sides and there he sits. He's staying in the coop until...
(Only listing the breeds I've owned for obvious reasons of course).
5.) Easter Eggers. Beautiful birds, every one of them looks different from the other with a variety of different-colored eggs you could potentially get. You never know what you're going to get when they grow up!
4.) White...
She appears to be an adult RLR. The silkie sounds like he is interested in her and is trying to court her to mate. How old are they? If you aren't getting eggs yet you probably will start getting them soon.
