Does anyone want my Langshan mutt cockerel? He is very quiet (I've had him for months and he just started making a tiny bit of noise at about 7:15 to get the girls out of the coop, then quiets down.), is friendly, but still has a healthy fear of humans. He is really very striking, but I live...
So was I! I was so worried that we'd end up with some noisy birds. I was feeling very discouraged after the 3 faverolle mutts were so loud but the 5 new girls that I have are very quiet and total lovebugs! Much better suited to a backyard flock!
Got the backyard "chickenproofed" enough that I let the girls out to free range "unsupervised" while I hung out in the house. First thing they did was tease the dogs. And this langshan mutt that I have just wants to be in all of my photos.
OK folks, my Langshan mutt that has pointy hackle and saddle feathers is laying. The other 4 birds have confirmed egg colors, and a white egg popped up in the nest box again. Last bird to get named - Gandalf the Grey.
How are you guys feeding garlic? Powder? Minced?
Additionally, I was thinking... I have some wormwood growing (the same variety used in Korea for baths, and for its hallucinogenic effects - my brother grew it when he was doing lots of drugs) that may be effective at worming, but I have no...
I'd love some input on this folks. My RSL finally started laying (I was beginning to worry that she was old, seems that she just was taking longer to "acclimate" to a new home, and then new flock mates than the others. Great success. My black copper marans seems to also be starting to lay...
The corn is pretty much the greatest thing they've ever had (they come running from across the yard when I go into the run to shake the container that I keep corn in for them) and they will peck at and eat the corn from the nipples, but don't seem interested in using the waterer. At some point...
Grrrr, trying to get my girls drinking from horizontal nipples. I have a chicken cup system that they like, and about a month ago added a horizontal nipple bucket in hopes that they would start using it so I can toss a birdbath heater in there come winter and not have to manage frozen water...
FLAX! I've been making an oatmeal-flax-unsweetened shredded coconut mixture and mixing some of that with the extra hot water left over after making coffee and giving that to the birds in the AMs. I will make a point of cutting back on that!
Yikes!
The egg that she laid 2 days later had no signs of this discoloration. Is it possible she was medicated at some point before we got her? She has been in an enclosed pen the entire time we've had her and all snacks have been "chicken approved" stuff. Should we avoid eating the eggs...
I had kind of a gross looking egg this AM. We got 3 new chickens a few weeks ago and just this weekend one of the new hens started laying. The flock they came from had roosters. This was the first egg that we got from her. Was it fertilized? I ended up feeding it to one of the dogs.
Rats are the biggest reason that we got rid of our ducks. They moved in under the buried pond liner and made it so my pitbull couldn't get them. We were able to flood out a few, but not enough to make a dent in the population.
So far so good with the chickens. No great hiding spots for...
Anyone in Olympia/South Sound area have a few pullets they're interested in parting with? My mom just finished her garden coop and is trying to figure out what chickens to put in it.
I've been thinking... I know there are some claimed benefits of adding apple cider vinegar to chicken water. Any idea of adding a little kombucha to the water would do the same trick?
If it makes you feel better, I grew 18 different varieties of tomatoes last year and was regularly harvesting beefsteaks after July. I never ONCE got a ripe indigo rose. They grew and matured and then sat there green on the vine.
I got a black langshan from someone locally and 100% fell in love with the breed. I'd like more, but preferably from a reputable breeder, and ideally blue, splash, or white. Anyone in the area breed these creatures?
