I was wandering if anybody has had this problem that I'm having. I built a new roll away egg boxes because I have an egg eater or two. I decided to build roll always instead of knocking off egg layers. So now the hens won't use the boxes and lay in the coop. Any suggestions or should I be...
We recently were given these 6 girls but have no idea what kind they are. Would somebody happen to know. They are supposed to be 6-8 weeks old. They have feathered feet, and are a little small.
This morning I discovered my roo on the roost w/ both eyes badly crusted over. After inspecting the rest of my flock of 20, I found one hen whose eyes are half closed, but no visible crusting. I see very tiny white mites near his eyes. Please advise how I might remedy this. Thanks in advance!
June 20th, we bought day old chicks to add to our group. 2 buffs, 2 silver laced, 2 sussex, 2 ancona, 2 brahmas, 2 Columbian Wyandottes, 1 Americona. It's now mid December and they haven't started laying. We use a light, we feed twice a day. We use a cookie tin heater for water as we live in...
We butchered a couple old egg layers today and while dressing them out I saw these tiny little things that to me looked like fish eggs or tapioca looking stuff. What are they. I have butchered many meat birds but this was the first egg layers and I've never seen this before. what was it?
I'm new to raising chicks, so I'm not sure what went wrong. I got 14 Cornish X chicks from TSC a week ago. I have them in a brooder indoors, heat lamp at correct temp, wood shavings for bedding, plenty of ventilation, constant supply of fresh water. One chick dropped dead yesterday, I have no...
I've read a few posts here about soft eggs, or eggs w/o shells, but there seemed to be a lot of conflicting info. One of my girls laid a "jelly egg" 2 or 3 days ago and today I got another one. I thought the first one was just a fluke, no big deal....but now there's another. I have six hens...
This morning we had our first snow since we got our chickens. It was rather hysterical watching them as they stepped out onto it, very apprehensive to say the least! Click below to see video, it's about 1 minute long.
It's been a while since I've posted anything about my girls. We've been having so much fun watching them and seeing each one of them with its own personality. We have our six girls and lately we have been getting 5 eggs regular and 6 eggs a couple times a week. Here's my question.....When we...
I started a thread about this last week when I didn't know what was going on: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=585064 . But now that I see what the problem is, I wanted to start a new thread in hopes of getting some help to this specific situation.
I just got my chickens last week, so I'm not experienced with illnesses. The farmer who sold me the hens (all about 5 months old) offered to exchange one of them yesterday because I caught her eating her eggs twice. So the replacement hen I brought home yesterday is about a year old. She...
I searched and could not find a thread on this subject, so forgive me if I'm posting a repeat.
I just got my chickens yesterday (six hens, about 5 months old). Tonight as they were going into the coop I noticed one of the hens was eating the remains of an egg inside the coop. Does this mean...
Just got my new coop and will be getting chickens next week. We are trying to prepare our coop for the winter - which is very cold up here on the mountain. I read that they must have ventilation, but also they need to be protected from drafts. We bought a finished coop, but we need to do some...
Hello all. We've been lurking on this forum for months and it's been so very informative! We just got our new coop this week and are getting chickens Monday, so we figured it's time to join this community. Looking forward to learning lots and sharing what we can. We're very excited about...
