5 week old chicks adopted by non broody hen

Hi all. Haven't been on the forum for years. Been raising chickens for over 13 years and am experiencing something I never thought possible and very interesting, worth a share. We have three 5-week-old (broody hen hatched) chicks who lost their mom to a fox two days ago. They have been...

    Hen or Rooster

A broody hatched 7 chicks 5 weeks ago I think I have 4 roo's and 3 hens. I don't think I have a close up of all of them but here are some. The dad to all of these is a RIR. This one in the middle is Cuckoo/RIR and I'm certain it's a rooster, the one in the back is RIR/welsummer and it has a...

Question about Broody and baby chicks in the cold

I hve a broody sittig on some eggs that should start hatching next weekend. My questions is will the hen and her chicks need heat or will she be able to keep them warm enough? Temps have been unusually cold her in NC and the lows have been in the 20s and 30s overnight.

How do you know if a broody gave up on the eggs

I had a hen go broody last Wednesday. I let her stay in the regular nest overnight and moved her the next night into a beautiful new maternity ward . I put the 7 eggs she orginally was sitting on in the nest. She wouldn't go sit on the eggs immediatly and when I checked on her before I went...

    Young eggs under broody hen

I am so happy I have a broody hen. Just wondering if the small eggs from some speckled sussex that recently started laying (probably been laying about a month now) would be ok to put under the broody. The speckleds are in with a Rooster so they should be fertilized just wondering about the...

    Crazy chicken

I have a speckled sussex that is 8 months old. She has been in with an older pullet, 2 of her sisters (same age same breed) and a 2 year old Brahma Rooster since she was 3 months old. The rooster left them alone until they were about 7 months old and then he started mating with them. They...

    Rooster??

This is one of my RIR's at 6 weeks old and I'm thinking Rooster. It has been showing some other rooster signs such as calling to the chicks in the evening to come in, being first to greet me and/or eat out of my hand and showing overall protective instincts. Sorry not the best picture but...

Live in Apex NC and looking for a working LGD for my goats

I'm having a hard time finding a livestock guardian dog that is already trained and ready to protect my sweet little goats. We recently had a doe kid and I'm starting to get really worried that something is going to get her. If anyone has any information that would be helpful and I'm willing...

Ear discharge and swollen ear lobe

I have a rooster that I noticed had a swollen ear lobe, just one, and while investigating it noticed he had some dried yellow discharge on his ear feathers (it was just a little). He isn't acting sick, no caughing or sneezing. Any ideas?

    Nigerian Dwarf Goats can fly

Got your attention, didn't it. New goat mom and started out with all my goats together as the woman I got them from says she does and hasn't had any problems. After reading/hearing about what can happen to my sweet pregnant doe who is due any day now if I don't separate them, put my buck and...

Chicken calendar that doesn't list the breed

So I have a weird question or maybe not so weird for this group. I got as a Christmas gift a Chickens 2012 Wall Calendar. It has pictures of some beautiful Roosters and hens however they didn't specify the breed on each month. A co-worker of mine who is also a professor has challenged me with...

    Sick chicken

I have a 1 year old red sex link that has a slightly swollen face, no sign of a cough or mucus, her butt feathers are a little dirty and her comb is unhealthy looking and slightly greyish, however she is walking around eating and acting otherwise normal. I have had three hens from this same...
