How are Jersey Giants & White Rocks?

I am strongly considering these 2 breeds for my chicken tractor meat birds this year. I know they are slower growing than typical broiler birds. But I was hoping to save a little on feed cost with better foraging and activity and maybe better flavor??

What are the odds of yearling geese laying a few fertile eggs this year? I have yearling Pilgrims, American Buffs, and Sebastopols. I have 1 male Pilgrim to 2 females. 1 to 1 on the Buffs. And 1 male to 3 female on the Sebastopol.

Custom ground feed with too much calcium?

The feed I had custom rolled a week or so ago isn't working out like I planned and I am not impressed. So I am trying another feed mill locally that can grind instead of roll. My question is this. I am using the complete breeder ration feed recipe from Holderreads book on ducks(page 287) but we...

Snapping Turtles - Any suggestions on elminating them from our pond?

Over the past few months we have had some ugly injuries to our ducks caused by a snapping turtles. I need to get rid of them ASAP and I am not concerned about relocation. I know you can use fishing hooks/wire/nylon rope. I am open to suggestions. I have yet to see the beast/beasts but I know it...

FYI: Diamond V YC livestock grade brewers yeast mixing ratio

I just got off the phone with a Rep. with Diamond V (they supply livestock grade brewers yeast). The Diamond V YC can be added at a rate of up to 5oz of Diamond V YC to 50lbs of feed. I am gonna try it at a rate closer to 3-4oz. per 50lbs of feed.

Keeping multiple breeds of geese together

Is it possible to have 2 or more varieties of geese living in harmony on the same property while not being separated? We have a pair of Pilgrim goslings and 2 female Sebastopols. Next year I am thinking of getting another pair Sebastopols and then adding either a pair of American Buffs or...

4-6 wk old ducklings not walking right or at all - VIDEO LINK ADDED

Why am I starting to have a few ducklings having hard time walking? Feeding 16% grower/finisher , a little brewers yeast in feed, and some vitamins in the water(a heaping 1/4 teaspoon of Durvet vitamins & electrolytes per gallon). I have 4-5 that are having problems. They are between 4-6 weeks...

    Dutch Hookbills - coloration traits

I got some of these ducks from Holderreads about 1 month ago. We love the Dusky-Bibbed coloration. The question is this: Is the the bibbed coloration passed down from the male, the female, or both? The reason I ask is because I think I have 1 male bibbed and at least 1-2 solid dusky male...

    Mean drake

Yesterday we noticed that our Rouen drake had been chasing/picking on 1 particular female. We have 1 Rouen drake and 7 other female ducks. He chases her away from the flock and the food. How do I deal with him? Solitary confinement or table? He doesn't pick on anyone else. He will lower his...

What is this on their foot?

Looks like it has just started....not too far along...and only a few of the ducklings have it. I put some wound cleanser(Neosporin) on it, put some Neosporin on it, and added some antibiotic to the water. I think this started because I had them in VERY close quarters and the pine shaving bedding...

    Duck Injury

One of our ducks got hurt this morning. It looks like she got bit by something in the pond. It is an area about 2" in diameter and is down to skin and a tad beyond that even. I just got home and I applied some foaming wound cleanser. She is separated. Should I apply some wound ointment and then...

    Too much wattage?

I placed a 'night light' inside our 4'x4' duck house for our ducks to be able to move around easier at night. I was wondering if a 7.5 watt light bulb will put off too much light? I know that if you subject ducks to a lot of light(all the time) that they will mature, grow, and lay faster. I just...

Just mailed in an order to Holderreads for some ducklings to ship in June and I hope that I am not too late. Hopefully we will get: 4 Dutch Hookbills, 4 Saxony, 2 Welsh Harlequin, 2 Cayuga, and 4 Magpies. So, if we get these, we will be at 24 ducks. Considering we started with 6 at the beginning...
