We weren't raised in the country so all of this is a new experience. Well, not brand new since we've been "out here" for almost 5 years now, but it certainly is a journey. There is always something to learn.
I built a new brooder for the back porch. Now, for the first time, it has chicks in...
I'm excited about this and a little scared! LOL I love every opportunity for the kids to see nature up close. As a home schooling family I believe this is part of a super valuable education. However... this hawk was IN MY COOP! I don't want to lose anymore chickens to the hawks. We've been...
Our only experience with incubators in the past has been with those little yellow dome "toys". They can work, but we didn't have much success.
A friend let us borrow a larger more automated incubator. We have 12 Silkie eggs in it for the first run. Here is the first little one to come out to...
We would like to start raising Guineas. I recently built a playhouse for my kids. Would it be ok to convert the bottom portion into a coop for the Guineas? The area is 6'x8' and about 5' tall. These will be free range birds so this will just be their roost/coop.

Ok, not yet... but I'm excited. We just ordered Australian Spotted Ducks. My 9 year old daughter wants the project of raising and breeding ducks.
I'll post pics when we get 'em :)
Starting 2013 off on a better foot. It's been a bit expensive this year in the garden already, but it should help me be better organized and produce more.

We are on our second batch of meat chickens. This time we are raising the Jumbo Cornish X. This video shows the birds at 3 weeks old and I'm taking them out of the brooder.
My next batch is in the brooder! This is our second time doing meat chickens. The first time we did the Cornish Roaster. We wanted to do those again, but the hatchery was sold out. We went ahead with the Jumbo Cornish Cross this round.
Here's a fun video of them in the brooder on day 2.
Here is a blog post of the book that I illustrated for my cousin. This project has consumed much of my time in the last few months and my chickens may have suffered some lack of attention, but I think it was worth it ;)

Hi all, (I know I'm in TX I should have said Y'all)... On my YouTube channel I have just posted a video of me proposing to give away a water bottle with my "daddykirbs" logo on it. I'm doing this as a way, hopefully, to build more of a relationship (at least more interaction) with those that...
