Our two year old speckled Sussex has been seemingly shaking her head and opening her mouth to gasp for air. It almost looks like a yawn--but it's not a yawn. This isn't all the time but often enough to be noticeable.
She did this as a pullet and then it seemed to go away until this year. The...
Truly I can’t say. The fact that there was a smell when she was indoors seems serious. It is a deep wound. This could be from over a month ago… she did get hurt but I thought it healed. Even kept her indoors for a week at the time. It’s not in the same exact place but her underside is vulnerable...
Hi everyone! I wish I was coming with better news. My broad breasted white turkey, Evelyn, is not doing well at all. Earlier yesterday she was doing fine going after food. Last night she had one swollen eye. This morning both eyes nearly sealed shut and was really acting sick. Not eating or able...
Hi, wonderful Backyard Chickens Community.
I feel guilty because I feel like I only come here with problems and wish I contributed more.
Tonight was not great. I was draining my 8.5 year old hen’s (Alice) ascites and was having trouble doing the draw (not sure if I hit a vein or what, poor...
Thank you so much for all the info. Just started her on the Monistat (Walgreens brand), the smell immediately went away, I know that’s probably because of the thickness of the cream but it gave me some hope. She’s had apple cider vinegar in her water so I was advised to wait to start her on a...
Smell is just bad, smells like bad breath I would say, if that helps? I will pick some up today right after work. Thank you! What if it’s a yeast infection in her crop? I read that it can spread from vent to crop. Maybe that explains the gasping?
I just gave it to her tonight actually, so hopefully that will do something to help! Thank you. Does it sound like anything that’s ever happened with your chickens?
Our coturnix quail hen is having a tough time right now. Noticed something off two weeks ago—feathers puffed up and she seemed to be having trouble walking, so I thought she was eggbound. Fed her crushed tums, soaked her in a Nekton solution and she seemed to improve. Days later I noticed a foul...
It is possible but unlikely, the male would have to fly over the fence into our yard because my hen can't fly for anything, and even when she free ranges she does so in our yard surrounded by chain link fence. Also no roosters here either ☹️ Thanks for your input!
She's with five hens and three ducks (only one male duck) no one is aggressive with her. When she free ranges, it's only during the day, but she does so with two pot bellied pigs. I know pigs can be nasty but they definitely didn't do this to her. The reason I asked if it was caused by lice or...
My 2 and a half year old broad breasted white hen has three really nasty, deep looking wounds. At first I thought the one on her chest was an injury but then found two more on even spots under her wings. Could they be caused by mites or lice? I am skeeved because I have several other birds...
Thanks for the reply! He does share the larger run with them but I’ve never noticed issues either free ranging or in the pen, he does have two female ducks to keep him company as well.
Last February I was given an Easter egger that was previously being kept with a conure by a former coworker. He gave her to me because he knew I have a four-chicken flock (RIR, Buff Orpington, Jersey Giant, and Silver-laced Wyandotte) as well as some other animals. Just for fun, I included a pic...
Would anybody be willing to tell me some of the great things about their cayuga ducks? Since I'm new to owning cayugas, I'd just like to get a better idea of what they're like! Please post pictures if you would like to!
For such little birds, quail sure can make a mess! I do think that is the reason why people keep them on wire--easier to clean. I don't keep mine on wire, because I didn't want their feet to get hurt, but if the spaces between the wire are not too big, and you make sure the wire is not rough or...
Shortly after getting my two pullets (a bantam blue cochin and a Delaware) home, I saw a few poultry lice on them. Parasites freak me out a lot, so I got right on it, and gave them a very small dose of livestock pour-on dewormer (with Ivermectin). I also changed their bedding and dabbed the...
