Raw chicken hearts are perfect to hide pills in… I used them for when my dog had Lyme. Just slip the pills in the pre existing pockets.
We feed the gizzards, hearts, livers and feet. If we did the butchering ourselves they’d get everything but the bile sac.
I feed a mix of oats, peas and fertrell nutribalancer to ducks over 5ish weeks (when they are done in the brooder and big enough to integrate with the flock). Oyster shells available free choice. It has worked well for my ducks. They do free range year round as well.
Never heard of a different rump color. Glad it worked for you. I don’t have much experience with khakis, I’ve mostly had other breeds. Never stuck with one long enough to really know them, but I’m slowly switching to an Ancona flock, at least for drakes. Probably will keep my hens for a while...
If I remember right, 12 weeks is good. Can be as early as 8 weeks. Khaki Campbell are not large ducks so don’t expect much meat. They are still delicious, just don’t follow a standard recipe for cooking them. I did the first time and had rubber duck meat.
I'm definitely pegging the solid khaki/gray one as a female. She’s the largest of all of them. Most of the bibbed gray ones are large as well, and the black bibbed ones are small. The Anconas are mixed, the chocolate one is small so I think (and hope) boy. If he is a boy I can do sex linked...
So yesterday I took some pics and tried to compare sizes. I think it’s an even split…. But it’s super hard to tell because for whatever reason (probably shipping) the Ancona are smaller in general. So currently I’d say 8 of each. one chocolate one died so I have 16 now.
Yes. But you often have to “chase” to get them to really quack. My current babies (6 week mixed breeds) are both very quiet when calm. But if I herd them outside the girl quacks loudly.
I’m considering getting a couple Muscovy hens to incubate for me. I found some straight run duckling but would probably harvest the males this fall.
My question is what is the meat like on a cross? My hope is to get a self producing meat source, obviously I’d feed them but the ducklings would...
I had 15 shipped from about 2 hours away (I know I know I could have picked them up). 6 hatched. The rest were from my ducks. I did turn them after one day… maybe I’ll wait a few more days with this batch. I do rest them 24 hours before setting.
Thanks. I’m new to hatching and was really hoping for a higher hatch rate with an expensive incubator. With my styrofoam one I got 3 out of 20some eggs that made it to lockdown. Started with 42 that time. With my Borotto I got 18 out of 42 that made it to lockdown after starting 49. But I think...
I’ve only done 2 hatches, but I’d do early. I put mine in lockdown a day early due to a long work day and came home in lockdown day to an external pip. So I’m glad I did a day early.
I have a borotto real 49. My last hatch (ducks) 42 made it to lockdown and 18 hatched. I’m not sure what happened, the temp and humidity were consistent. Someone said maybe the temp was too low.
I set two calibrated thermometers in there and turned it on for a day. Depending on where I set the...
I know exactly what you mean- mine got out yesterday and ran the whole yard! Finally got them corralled back in the fence.
They are all so cute! You’ll miss the 14 when they leave.
Most places recommend waiting several weeks. Personally I offer supervised swimming in warm water the first 1-2 weeks, then a pool with steps in and out after that. If they can’t easily get in and out they can drown.
I have an outdoor brooder. The floor is hardware cloth. I covered the cloth the first 2 days, then they had access to the grass poking up. After about a week I set up a fence so they have outdoor access during the day. It is highly dependent on temps though- it’s been 70s-90 here. And they can...
