I upped their feed to the 20%, have an oyster shell dish in a high traffic area so they have ready access to it and I filled a few eggs with orange dish soap. They gobbled up the soap eggs. I'm dumbfounded.
I also found that Hydrated Lime is very effective at eliminating flies. I'm very lucky that I haven't had to try it on mites since I got rid of them with Elector PSP.
This summer has been horrible. First mites, then flies and now every last hen is eating their eggs. I watch them. They lay the egg turn around and start pecking at it. I had a ceramic darning egg that hurt their beaks in the nesting box and it worked until my dingbat son collected the egg...
After 10 years I ran out of places to bury and I have 5 acres of diggable land. So I started walking them out into the woods and placing them under leaves and roots to return them to nature. Make sure your are a great distance away so you don't attract predators.
My two pet chickens have a...
If memory serves, once you wash the membrane off the outer shell, they will not incubate any further. Candle them or float test them and discard the incubated ones.
I had a rooster, only 2 yrs old, go through the same thing. Two weeks adtwr being treated foe mites I found he was getting beat up by the other rooster and stopped eating and drinking. The injuries were what got him in the end, not the mites.
One farm vet nearby but I can't afford him. She's eating and drinking and I gave her calcium after chasing her around the chicken yard for 15 min. If she does show signs of decline I will euthanize her. I love my hens but after 10+ years of losing sleep and crying over dying chickens I just...
Ugh, I was worried about that. I'm in NYS and I'll have an easier time getting weed than antibiotics. This is not a hobby farm friendly state.
So many of my home hatched birds end up with weird innards. Most of them are poor layers and have weird ailments. I had one that pooped out her...
Unfortunately no. I have ~50 chickens and this hen as well as 6 others are whats left of large clutch of barnyard Sussex/Easter egger/Barnevelder/Barred rock mix hatched 2 years ago. I rarely see any of them in the nesting box, but then again, most of my hens are geriatric charity cases.
I'm...
One of my younger (2+ yrs old) hens pooped water and blood in front of me this afternoon. She doesn't appear ill in any way but when I grabbed her I could see she had dried yolk around her vent.
We have no new chicks in our flock.
Nothing new introduced to the environment, same coop, run and...
So sorry for your loss! We all know what that's like. It's time to be on the offensive!!! Trap predators and one way ride to a hole in the ground! You can do this!
Most flea and tick treatments are designed to be given to cats and kittens who are 8 weeks of age or older. I had 3 mos old kittens dropped off in our barn a few years ago and the vet put Revolution on them. The stray male that turned up in our barn a few months ago was given Nexgard Combo...
We lost our three Turkey poults Tuesday night to a predator. Broke through chicken wire into the run and dragged all three out and into the woods nearby. Left a few parts and pieces but nothing whole. Our experience with coons is they kill and eat right there and fox drag out and away, but...
