Man, that sucks. I'm in northern Nevada and the heat here has been brutal for weeks--105 to 107. So glad Houston is doing better, given time she might be back to her old self. You sound like you take excellent care of your pets and a wonderful chicken lady. :)
It might be worth a try to give...
I once had a chick in the incubator that kept flipping over. I made him this little 'Chick Dalek' out of a circle of heavy cardboard and tape. It went from the top of his chest to his feet, snug enough around so he couldn't fall over. The bottom was open, so he could still walk around the...
I found a great article on how to do a saturated salt calibration on hygrometers using a quite larger dish! He brings up the excellent point that you want to read the area 3 inches above the salt slurry, it contains air with a predictable humidity value. I used this method and it works...
Thanks for the feedback! I went ahead and ordered some equipment. Just in case anyone else is in the same boat or WILL be in the future, I'll update this thread when I find out what the heck is going on with my incubator and eggs...knowledge is power!
Another possibility, this one operates via Bluetooth:

Just in case anyone else is looking for something like this, a friend pointed me to this one...it's a chef's temperature probe with a high/low alarm feature! You can set it for as little as a two degreee difference. It seems to be just what we need to 'cook' our chickens--LOL, who knew...
I'm looking for recommendations for a temperature alarm I can use with my ReptiPro incubator. The alarm should have a probe that goes inside the incubator, and I'd *like* to get one accurate to +/- one degree, and can track drops/spikes in temperature. I see lots of charting thermometers that...
We got two 'Smokey Pearl' chicks from Tractor Supply about a week ago. Can't wait to see what they mature into!
Interesting tho--one chick has slatey dark grey legs/beak/facial skin, the other doesn't. But the one who doesn't, DOES have a tiny black heart marking on her left thigh! I hope she...
Chickam Update! I candled eggs again last night, we have 7 eggs with chicks! 4 more eggs are questionable, so I left them in the ReptiPro and we'll see how they do. 5 other eggs had quit and were removed. Hatch is on schedule for 3 days from now, Saturday April 11th!
The channel is activated...
We'll be hatching chickens!
We've been doing a live webcast of our hatch since 2008, we call it Chickam. Our hatch is planned for April 11th. You can watch the Chickam hatch on YouTube, with chat, then the following 8 weeks of the chicks' lives--the camera will run 24/7--here: Chickam!
We...
My eggs are pipping! Seven pips so far, 22 eggs in the incubator, I saw embryos in 19 of them (the other three have dark shells I can't candle through). We expect hatching to begin later today!
I update the Chickam Twitter here: https://twitter.com/?logout=1555618634188
You can watch the Chickam...
Set 28 eggs in our ReptiPro today! An assortment of standard and bantam eggs, in various breeds and mixes from our backyard flock. I'll candle them in 10 days to see what we've got. Hatch date *should* be April 20th.
Every year for the last 11 years we have webcast our hatch and the following 8...
Thanks for taking the time to look that up, but it appears to be a different site with the same name. Scott Shilala's 'The Easy Chicken' site had a message board and tons of very useful articles. It IS on archive.org so you can still get to some of the information, here's a link to what it used...
Terrible! Seconding the advice above on charcoal/Vit K and getting dead birds/eggs tested by the state--the fee may be nominal or zero. Also I'd install motion activated lights/cameras (the motion activated trail cameras wth night vision are a great idea) because nothing says he won't do this...
I wanted to offer to donate a prize or two for the 2019 Hatch A Long contests this year, if you'd like (I contributed a few before). I make origami models as physical therapy and have an Etsy shop (linked below) if you'd like to see examples of what I make, just let me know if I can donate...
Just noticed The Easy Chicken site run by Scott Shilala is gone, and I think has been gone for quite a while. Anyone know what happened to it, or if it moved?
Yay! Yeppers, gonna set a batch of standard & bantam eggs from our mixed flock in our ReptiPro on March 30th, hatch day *should* be April 20th-21st...of course, the banty eggs will NO DOUBT hatch a day or so early, like they *love* to do.
Every year we do a live webcast of our hatch on YouTube...
Dang, the teflon-coated bulb thing is sneaky...I know how sensitive cage birds are to teflon fumes from household pots and pans, but never would have suspected a teflon coated bulb! Great detective work, gang. So sorry this happened to you OP, but thanks very much for posting about it--it will...
