I guess like a lot of things my family and I get into, chickens seemed like natural progression! We have a friend that we buy eggs from who has a flock of around 100 or so chickens. One day I thought to myself "why not raise some of our own?" From there we have not looked back! We will be...
Does anyone have any quick ideas/answers to helping me solve my cracked egg problem? I have plenty of wood shavings in the coop and some nice foam rubber on the bottom of the nesting boxes but some of my eggs still seem to be cracking before I can collect them. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks
Man, I love this thread! Great info and its exersising my brain!
I totally agree with LA Poulet previous post.
Sometimes people place to much emphasis on education. If I had a choice to choose between a Phd. and common sence...................I would choose common sence any day, all day long...
Wow, I never thought I would learn this much about chicken love! Sweet! Kepp it coming!
Everyone has something there good at, each one of us throwing something it the collective pot of life. You have your rocket scientists and your floor sweepers and everthing inbetween.
Relax, dont take...

Todd, is the support material for your enclosed run metal tubing or PVC? I cant tell. I would definately use it when I have to replace supports in my run when they rot out.
Andy
When I was putting together the plan for our coop/run I was trying to figure out how to have cover for the hens without actually covering the run with a solid material so I just fenced in the bottom of our coop so, if they want they can go under it to get out of the weather.
I have to agree with the last two posts, if you are not educated about something due to the fact you are not exposed to it................it does not mean you are stupid.
How do you set the timing on a Chevy small block engine? What do you mean you don't know?!?! I knew how to do that since I...
As far as flying predators goes, my experience with red tailed hawks is they do not like to swoop down and grab any prey -- chickens, mice, rabbits, chipmunks, etc. in an area were there is a bunch of trees or other overhead cover. So, if your coop is around a decent amount of tree cover you...
Being new to chickens I was wondering if you folks can tell me how often you have to check for pasty butt?
I try to see if each one is pooping normally but, (haha) with eight I cant see be sure about them all!
Thanks, Andy.
Well, the chick that was all fired up, strutting around and chirping like crazy has mellowed out and is acting like the rest.
They all seem to be having a blast, man can these little chicks eat!
Eat, Drink, Poop.
Four Black Australorps and Four White Barred Rocks. After reading the many posts about chicks arriving in poor health or worse I was relieved that they arrived OK alright!
I just brang our eight new chicks home this afternoon............I went in on an order with some other folks. They all arrived healthy and happy.
What a bunch of cute little ones! So funny to watch, sleeping and playing with each other.
There is on White Barred Rock chick that is a riot...
You could use a colored stain or any exterior paint that is non-toxic. Or you could just use plain untreated wood. In reality even here in Connecticut you would get a number of years before wood that is untreated would rot out.
For easy clean up of the inside of the chicken coop floor (in theory anyway!) I used a sheet of vinyl of the type that you might find in you shower say. I have the outside of the coop barn red, but after reading these posts on what people paint the interiors of their coops I just might have to...
I asked the very same question a short time ago and was told 10" x 10" to 12" x 12". I was also told to keep the door opening up off the floor at least 6" so the bedding stays in. For the ramp I am going to go with a 2" x 8" with small horizontal wooden strips on it evenly spaced to provide the...
