Another one if you don't mind. All of Emma, My 2 (I think) Year old RIR and the treat ball. My neighbor moved this spring and gave me her girls so I'm not exactly sure how old they are.
Ooh, I just saw this post! Lucky for me there are a few days left. My girls aren't much for pictures, but after about 20 blurry ones, we finally got a few cute and some funny ones. :-)
and of course, my favorite funny one...
I wish her face wasn't so blurry but still, it's one of my...
I too got mine at my local TSC but they had a couple of different choices. One of the ones was about the size of a fist and built like a cage (more for lettuce and larger treats), with a bell on the bottom, like this.
but there are others out there too. This one looks great for nuts and seeds...
Welcome Cats and Chicks! Bedding, as you can see, is a hot topic around here. I'm fairly new myself so I'm no expert but I can tell you what I've experienced. I too have a small coop (see my profile picture) and use shavings. My girls come out during the day but my husband has been in the...
I found this article pretty accurate but I've had a bit of an unusual start. I got my 2 hens, coop, run and water can free from my neighbor who was moving. I did purchase a 5 gallon bucket...as you can see from my profile picture, the coop is a small one and I clean out the poop every 2 days or...
Bethel3330 -Do they scratch around it enough to dig up the roots? I guess it's okay if they don't eat it as long as they scratch up the roots enough for me to take a rake or fork or something to it to get it up easily. I don't want to be wading around in the stuff. I may not be allergic...
I have 2 RIR that my neighbor gave to me. Unfortunately, because I got them a bit older, they are not as open to attention as the above posts but they don't peck at me or anything. They aren't huge fans of being held but they love my company. They will sit at my feet and stare at me if I'm...
Thank you! We do handle them but not quite as often as you. I am thinking of maybe making this a run that I let them in maybe for a while. Then let them get clean from the oils and handle them so they stay used to us and go back & forth. Once the roots are cleaned out, I can maintain it.
Will, and is it okay for chickens to eat poison ivy? I know it says "Poison" right in the title but still... Here is the problem. I have a patch of poison ivy I've been trying to get rid of for years. Over the last several years (long enough for the poisons to have been washed away), I gave up...
The strange part is that this is their original coop. The same one they've had for almost 2 years now. I'm going to get my husband to find a way to keep it in place while still allowing me to take it out when I clean the coop. When I get around (time & money is more like it) to building a coop...
Thank you TwoCrows! That seems like very helpful information. I will try them both and think all of us will feel better for it. I will be less nervous if I can't see that they are nervous and I will make the curtains as soon as I can. Work is letting us out early tomorrow in anticipation of the...
Update...I didn't come home for lunch today as work bought us lunch and I figured I should stick around for it. The girl that had the hens before didn't pick up the eggs until she got home at night sometimes so it shouldn't have been a problem, except that when I got home, one was in the nest...
My answer is pretty much the same as HeChicken. Mine make some noise between 5:15 AM and 6:30 AM sometimes more noise (and louder too) than others but they don't lay until sometime between 9 AM and noon.
That's a very good idea HeChicken. I just saw another post about free ranging chickens and one person had nesting boxes in the coop but also had a "free range nesting box" out in the yard just in case the hens didn't want to walk all the way back to the house (she had a lot of land).
I too have a small coop and use wood shavings. I go and clean out any mess every couple of days. Once a month or every couple of months I plan on doing a good clean where I take out everything, clean the coop and start fresh. I keep a 5 gallon bucket under the nesting boxes. In this bucket is a...
