my Serama eggs hatch much better when hatched by the hens. I always lose some when I hatch them in an incubator. Unfortunately, I don't always have a broody hen to tuck the eggs under. I think Serama eggs are a bit fussy to hatch.
I don't think we will have any greens this year. A rabbit has helped himself to them and there isn't much left. Hopefully we will have pea pods that I can give to the chickens this year. I like the idea of freezing them with water for summer treats. We have given them watermelon rinds before but...
What are some good plants that I can grow in my garden that my chickens will enjoy eating? I need some fast growing plants that produce a good amount of food. I understand that free ranging is best, but I don't want to let my chickens free range due to a dog attack that killed most of my flock a...
Congrats! I love finding chicks under my hens! I occasionally give up on fighting broody hens and let them have the egg, but It's always so much fin to see a new little face peeking out from under it's momma.
I have a confession. I bought 3 more chicks today. They are Buff Orp pullets. It was my husbands fault! I was going to walk right past them, but he pointed them out and told me to come and see them. He knows very well that telling me to loo at chicks is the same thing as telling me to go ahead...
Thanks. My Ameraucana chicks are doing great! I have lots of colors of Seramas. Black, black and white, gold laced etc. I think I even have a mauve pullet! Of course the mauve pullet will be staying here :-) Some of my Seramas are becoming my new pets. They're adorable!
NanaKat,
I'm sorry that you lost so many. It's always hard to lose your favorites!
I'm working on new/better pens to keep the predators out. I also want to add better feeders and waterers so the food and water stay cleaner and automatic doors.
It sounds like you do a lot of hatching. I have a...
How is everyone doing with hatching this year? I hatched out lots of Serama chicks over the last couple of months. I want to put all of my Seramas in one coop/pen, but I needed more girls to keep my roosturds from fighting over the girls. I've been giving away the cockerels and keeping the...
You're welcome :-) The steaming time just depends on how well done you want them. The length of time needed is the same as when you boil them. Egg shells are porous so steaming them allows oxygen to get into the shell to separate the membrane from the shell. That membrane is what makes it hard...
Awesome! I can't wait to see/buy some of your chicks! Are you planning to breed all of your best stock this year? Or are some of them retired from breeding?
I'm so sorry about your losses! I lost 14 chickens to dog attacks this year. I have never before lost that many in one year. I'm keeping my chickens in a coop with a pen, but the pen doesn't have a cover over it. I will be working on a few new coops with covered runs this year. My chickens are...
Does anyone here have any Legbar hatching eggs for sale? I'm looking for Crested Cream or Golden Crele. We had a dog attack a few days ago and lost 12 chickens. I want to replace the dead chickens with Legbars. I currently have Opal (Isabel) Legbars and I want some Creams and Golden Creles to...
