Hello, last week we lost 10 chickens overnight with no signs of an animal attack. Our only thought was maybe they're waterers were too dirty or contaminated. (Our well water did get high in nitrates and a new filter put on recently also.) We changed their water, cleaned out the system, and no...
Meyer Hatchery is phenominal. Best experience is with them. McMurray is good too. I would stay away from Hoovers. I have now had three bad experiences with them.
Hi Nat J,
We have 290 that will be 4 weeks old on the 16th, and 65 coming the end of this week. We're a small farm trying to expand our flock.
Our heated brooder is in an unheated greenhouse. We just started letting the older ones out of the brooder and into the unheated GH during the day, but...
Hello, a hatchery sent us baby chicks on December 16th and unfortunately we lost many from the batch upon delivery. They are now sending over more on January 16th. I'm hoping by 2-3 weeks of age I can combine them together but wondering if anyone has any experience with this before. Due to our...
We have a chicken who we believe was born with this problem. One leg will go completely backwards and she hobbles around. Any ideas what to do? (Sorry for the vertical video. I didn't take it!)
Hello,
This newborn chick seems to have been born with a broken or deformed leg. You can rotate it fully forward, or backwards. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help fix her? (Unfortunately a Vet is not an option.)
Thanks for any advice (and sorry for the horrible vertical video!)
Thanks for all the concerns and suggestions. We did separate her and gave her vitamins. I feel like it's a broken toe or toes. Fortunately I found veterinarian school student who is taking her to her professor to be looked at. Thanks again for the feedback.
Does anyone have ideas on how to treat this injured hen. We don't have access to a Vet. She is 2 months old.
(Video goes horizontal after a few seconds.)
Thanks for any help and advice.
Thank you all for your suggestions. We'll be scouting the coop and fence-line today. We have 200 hens so wrangling them all in every night is not doable. Believe it or not, despite having enough room in the coop about 50 of them prefer to sleep outside. Not sure how they'd like tonight's single...
Hello,
I know these photos are not great, but can anyone tell what type of predator this is?
We believe it may be a skunk due to a slight smell in the coops. They are mostly neck injuries, and we saw something that looked either like a racoon or skunk prints. It was too blurry due to rain...
Hello, and thank you all for your advice. We tried the epsom salt bath once with no luck. We just tried again and managed to scrape the scab (?) off. It almost looks like part of her leg too but she didn't fuss "too" much when we did it so I can't imagine it is. Never seen anything like this...
Hello, we just noticed one of our barred rocks was limping around and discovered a crevice in her leg that now has dirt/debris/an infection(?) stuck in it. Has anyone encountered something like the photos below and does anyone know how to treat it?
Thank you.
Hi, I'm sorry for the delayed response. I'm not sure how I overlooked this message.
Yes, both are limping like that. I feel like there is somewhat of a bump on the bottom of their limping foot, but it's not discolored. I've been soaking their feet in warm water with epsom salt every so often.
Hi All,
We have two chickens, one barred rock and one RIR, that are limping around as such. We have a wide open field but it just seems odd to me that two of our 200 just started doing it at the same time. It looks to me like it is more like her foot is injured rather than her leg. Any thoughts...
I have one chicken that seems to be sick. Her legs are scaly so I am treating her for scaly leg mites, but she is also squeaky. That is the only sound she makes. This morning I noticed that when other chickens bolt for the food, this one walks around, is interested in it, but lets the others...
