Red sex link diet
I have had Red Sex-links (Golden Comets) in the past.
I currently have 2 ISA Browns (Red Sex-links) 19 months old and feed them a conventional Layers feed 16% Protein, available 24/7.
I get on average 5 eggs weekly from each.
I give a treat of Scratch Grains 1 Tbsp each...
I buy enough feed for 6 weeks to 2 months and keep inside my house in a spare room. I've never had feed go bad before 5 months after mill date.
I only keep a large coffee can of feed in the storage area in each of my 2 small coops of 9 chickens total. GC
For egg laying breeds 18% Protein is fine, it's what I use. What's not is its pellets according to Banana01.
Crush them up in a blender 1 cup at a time in pulse mode or 2 cups in a regular size food processor. GC
I like to feed a Starter-Grower feed 18% till the first eggs from each breed, then mix with a Layer feed for a week or until the Starter-Grower is gone.
I do add a separate container of Oyster Shells at 15 weeks old.
Do you add lights to encourage laying during the winter season?
GC
Sex-links like ISA Browns and Golden Comets lay through winters in my experience.
My first flock (Golden Comets) never had a hard molt, just soft molts and continued to lay.
My current ISA Browns are 18 months old and in a soft molt and still laying 4 to 5 eggs each weekly.
My first non-hybrid...
Been there, done that.
I switched back to a Layers feed with FLAX for the OMEGA 3s, up to 5 times a store bought egg.
I see no difference in egg production or feather plucking between 16 and 20% Protein in my 5 years of feeding different Protein levels.
My Hens (18 months old) in a soft molt are...
I have 4 RIR and had 4 BR, (one was injured by a Bobcat), 3 BR now.
I bought my chicks May 15 from TSC, estimate they were 3 days old.
I got my first egg at 21 weeks old, all 8 were laying at 23 weeks. I do add lights in the morning at 5 am.
I kept them on a Starter-Grower feed 18% till 20...
