Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Aloha! Funny I just sent someone to this site the other day with a bumblefoot roo! We have 3 new Easter Egger chicks to add to our 12 other mixed crew! I've been exploring breeds and now have 2 Polish, 3 Spitzhaubens, a Silkie, a Mille d'Fleur, an Americana, a wild hen mix (8 yrs old now!)...

    Antibiotics?!

There are very very few legal drugs for use in chickens in the U.S. For a complete list, go to farad.org. It does not matter if your chicken is a pet or a commercial production hen as far as the law is concerned. Your veterinarian is really sticking their neck out here. I would thank them for...

What's the one thing you wish you had included in your coop?

I have a cleanout door that hinges on the floor and flaps out to the run. My coop is elevated, so I can put a wheelbarrow just below the door flap and use a hoe to shove all of the coop bedding right in. It's awesome! By far the best new feature to my new coop. The peel-and-stick-down...

Bald butt and swollen below vent.

I expect eventually I will be able to do that. Just some hens are more special than others, as I'm sure you have experienced. These were all part of my original flock. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this forum. I have learned a lot from reading posts from those more experienced.

Bald butt and swollen below vent.

For all of you wanting updates on this type of problem: As stated by others previously, there are several problems that can cause fluid to accumulate in the abdomen (ascites). While none of the diagnoses are particularly favorable, some are more treatable than others. I have a Rhode Island...

What to Feed Chickens to Gain weight?

I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd share on the roach hunt comment. Our girls LOVE roaches, so we do feed them as treats (keeping in mind you may need to deworm more often). To catch roaches at night, get an empty spaghetti sauce jar and spread vaseline on the inside of the opening...

HELP / URGENT! - Abused/fighter? rooster in Hawaii (Oahu)

Thank you and Dean for helping this rooster. It can be very hard to find homes for roosters here in Hawaii but I would agree Craigslist and the shelter are probably your best options. Can he use the bad foot?

    Chicken with a limp

Hopefully you are right and some rest is all that is needed. Soaking it may help regardless just to get some good blood flow going there. There are anti-inflammatories and pain meds that can be given to chickens but you'd have to check with a vet that does chickens since most of them would be...

    Decrowing Roosters

Aloha from Hawaii! I know of many people here with the same issue. I would love to talk to the vet in Oklahoma about this surgery if you can tell me his/her name? I'm an Oklahoma State Vet School grad myself! In a perfect world, they would all be in homes where they could crow...

Please help! Chicken probably have egg yolk peritonitis, and she doesn't eat and barely drink on her

You are absolutely right enola. Thank you for posting this. Please do NOT try to do open abdominal surgery on your chickens! At the least, this will be 99.99% unsuccessful, if not legally considered animal abuse. General anesthesia is needed for this!

    Chicken with a limp

Check the bottom of her foot and make sure she doesn't have a sore there. if you see a bump with a dark center scab, search the forums for "Bumble foot". Best of luck!

Bald butt and swollen below vent.

This sounds like ascites, which is an accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. According to what I have read, it can be secondary to heart disease, liver disease, cancer, or egg peritonitis. I have had this in 3 hens now, all were older. You (or a vet) can remove the fluid with a needle...

    Hawaii vet learning about chickens

Learning through experience (and BYC)! I have some older girls who have developed ascites (some of which have passed away), I've dealt with sour crop, broken toes, and dog trauma. I'm amazed at how hardy these girls are! Some recover against all odds! Started with adults, then pullets last...

    Hawaii vet learning about chickens

Aloha from Hawaii island! Thank you BYC for the educational information! "Real life" experiences from users have proven very helpful for me to care for my own hens and a few friends. It's hard to find vet information for pet chickens since most resources are for large-scale operations. All...
