How do you store your feed/scratch?

The best thing I found was an old freezer. It is inside my chicken coop on the concrete slab out of the elements & partitioned off from the birds. It holds 10 bags of feed. It has been great for storage away from the hens and mice.

Feed Price and money saving tips

Wow, the price of feed is getting to the point where it is almost not worth it anymore. Feed prices came down a little bit in the last few months, but I expect it go up again. It was $15.99 for 16% layer last fall, not it is down to $13.99. We have been fermenting our feed to help make it go...

    Easter Sausage

look on Youtube for Nutty Gnome Homestead. They had a delicious rabbit/chicken sausage recipe video posted last year. I've made it a few times and it was good. We used natural casings for them.

    Easter Sausage

We use natural casings for all our sausages except the summer sausage chubs. My wife is a 1st gen polish girl, so I went direct to the source for a recipe. I'll tell you it is simply a mix of Pork, salt, pepper, fresh garlic, marjoram, and cure #1. Far superior to anything you can buy in the...

    Potato harvest

For us, we start now chitting our potatoes. In a few weeks, we will have nice stubby green sprouts ready to plant. Since we have our potato plot in an old horse pasture, things are compacted down and not much top soil left. We have amended this by planting cover crops annually, adding tons of...

    Got Cabbage?

Lord knows I have plenty. last year, we grew over 100 heads of 2-3 pound cabbages. To save on space, I decided to grow only a few dozen of some larger varieties this year. I've grown the OS cross before, but I'm always amazed to see cabbages this big. Not to mention, I enjoy everyone stopping by...

    Potato harvest

Well, we sat out to grow a years supply of potatoes. I think we did well. Now, the real work begins. With a hand injury, I won't be planting a 2nd crop or a fall garden like we normally do. Over 170 pounds harvested.

    Giant produce

our greenhouse is too hot in the summer, we use it to start our seeds for fall planting in there then transplant them. We do grow in the green house in the fall/winter. We picked another big melon last night. Personal best at 27 lbs. The 4" of rain was causing the melon to split, or I would...

    Giant produce

Well, last year I grew some big (to me) pumpkins and wanted to branch out. This year I decided on a few melons. These colossal cantaloupe are huge! The excessive rain this week causes some to start to crack, so I needed to pick them early. I have a few more still growing. We also grow giant...

    Honey!

Normally I pull my honey the last week of May or the 1st of June. However, this year I was unable to for several reasons. I was glad to get into my hives last week and pull over 110 pounds. Seems like the honeysuckle and clover are perpetually in bloom here so, I'm hoping to harvest at least 1...

    Easter Preparations

With all the doom and gloom going on in the world, I figured it would be best to focus on this coming weekends Easter gatherings. In preparation of having my wife's family down for Easter, I made 35 lbs of sausage. Kielbasa wedzona, Kielbasa Biala Surowa, and rabbit sausage. I smoked the...

Chickens ate all the garden plants/cover crop

From Oct-Jan we have provided several sources of additional protein, mainly in the form of deer carcasses, fish, and what's left over from processing rabbits. the additional protein has been pretty consistent being 2x a week something extra is provided. What has been concerning to me is, we do...

Chickens ate all the garden plants/cover crop

Well, we always plant a cover crop/fall & winter forage for our chickens and rabbits. It typically includes a mixture of winter wheat or rye, turnips, beets, rape, kale, sometimes clover and more. We alternate what/where we plant in the garden, and often have thick lush green mats the animals...

Yes, I'm on several FB meat rabbit groups. I don't tan anymore. My buyer has requested the mask be left on the pelts, so I skin them this way.

How did you prepare yourself (mentally) for first time butchering?

For me, its business not personal. We eat meat! I raise food for my family. I raise meat chickens, rabbits, ducks, etc for food.
