I have 2 coops. One is 12 sq feet the other 16 sq feet. Both have 2: 5 inch holes cut out at the roof line with mesh over them.

Cold Temps bring frozen breath on chickens - opinion?

So weird cause we have put in lots of ventilation, I suppose we could put in more? No frostbite, just ice crystals from their breath. One of my coops is pre-fab, one is homemade.

No heat in the coop and dead bird

No frost bite here either... Just frozen ice crystals on the girls feathers. My silkies afros are crystalized and a little on their backs. My big girls only frosted between shoulder blades where they tuck in and breathe all night. Anyone with a large comb gets a barrier salve.

No heat in the coop and dead bird

One coop is 12 sq feet and there are 3 under a year old silkies (they are small). It's quite a lot of space for 3 little birds. There are 2: 5 inch round holes in the top of the coop walls that are screened. Should be plenty of ventilation, yet there is frost on my birds. My 2nd coop is 16 sq...

No heat in the coop and dead bird

I have 2 coops. The one coop has slanted roof, and we have large vented air holes that should be allowing plenty of ventilation... so I'm confused to why this is happening to my birds.

No heat in the coop and dead bird

I am in New York and am experiencing some similar coop issues. My coop is by the rule books, good ventilation - no drafts. My girls woke up this morning with their breath frozen on their feathers and I am concerned.

Cold Temps bring frozen breath on chickens - opinion?

Hello! It is getting into the negatives here in New York, last night we had our first -3. Coldest winter in NY in yeaarrrsss. This morning I went out to my flocks and my girls had frozen condensation upon them where they tuck in their heads at night. So I am assuming their breath is freezing...

    Winter Molt?

Mating ratio for hens to roos is 10 to 1. 1 rooster, to 10 hens. She is probably being over mated. You could get your girls hen saddles?

    Winter Molt?

Hello! I have a 9 month old Easter Egger. She is my matriarch of our now only 2 chicken flock :( (for now!). I have noticed over the past few days feathers in the bottom of the coop, and today could see feathers just dropping off her as she went about her business. I suspect she is molting as I...

    Beak fungal infection

One of my girls had this too. I cleaned it every day wearing gloves then with a q-tip applied over the counter anti-fungal cream found in the foot area of any store every day until it was cleared up. It cleared up nicely, my poor girl actually had holes in her beak from it.

Can my small flock of 20 chickens bring bed bugs into the house???

Humans and chickens don't share the same external parasites. Good luck!

    Fattening a recuperating Hen

You can put her on chick starter/grower for awhile. Perhaps as a mash with baby food on top. I buy the veggie and fruit baby foods in a pouch, and squirt it in droplets a top the mash. You really don't know what's in cat food. Scrambled eggs. While giving starter/grower always offer free range...

    Bleeding Comb

Styptic powder to stop the bleeding, then a little bacitracin. <3 On nights with terrible temperatures... bag balm, burts bees non petroleum salve, or coconut oil. It gives the cold a barrier. Henny and Roo sells comb and wattle salve, there are also recipes on Pinterest.
