I like that they stay near their little house. Lol

    Free ranging

We live in the woods where we have lots of predators. For us letting our flocks free range is scary. We lost a hen to an owl one day and a hen to a dog another day. So we've been pretty adamant about keeping the flocks inside unless we are right out there with them. We moved and are still in the...

    Maine

What's wrong with your hen? I ask because we have 7 years of experience with chickens. Of course in that time we've dealt with sick girls and tended them. Didn't know if I could offer advise if it's something we've dealt with. We are in limerick maine.

    Silkie roosters for free

Thanks. I have it on craigslist already too. I don't have Facebook so that's not doable.

    Silkie roosters for free

I hatched out some silkie eggs and now at 3 1/2 months old we've found some roosters. My alpha won't tolerate mating of his hens and these boys are starting. So it's time to find good homes because I don't want cock fighting and I don't want my hens beat up by teen roos. The hens are very...

Missing feathers on front of neck

Sorry. I was in for a minute from taking care of our coops. My rooster is missing some neck feathers again. So he did a slight molt. Possibly where they don't eat greens that might be contributing to it.

Missing feathers on front of neck

Good morning. You may have nothing to worry about. We've had chickens that this has happened to. Even our roo has had it. Typically it grows back but may take up until their next molt. Beef up your protein and I've even seen regrowth by feeding chick starter to my adult birds. Not every chicken...

    9 week old brahmas. Genders?

That's kind of my thinking too. I'm looking forward to the possibilities. I will post photos, however, I don't know ow how long it will be before we can. At least 6 months or more.

    9 week old brahmas. Genders?

Thanks for the info. We don't show our birds, so feather patterns don't matter to us. They are pets to us and of course we enjoy their eggs. I'm quite taken with the breed and also silkies. We'd like one to be a male so we can sell fertilized eggs and of course hatch more. They are beautiful...

    9 week old brahmas. Genders?

These are 2 hens we bought from him. They are huge and wonderful. I'm not sure about his breeding but all his brahmas are beautiful and very large.

    9 week old brahmas. Genders?

We have had and still have a couple cochins. This guy looks nothing like the ones we've had. Also, both tails look the same. That's why we're still trying to figure it out. We have a couple other brahma hens and their tails are the same.

    9 week old brahmas. Genders?

The lighter one still has a lot of light yellow, but in her neck, tail and legs it's turning lavander. The black isn't cochin. We got the eggs from a guy who only has brahmas and hatched them. He has some whit spotting developing on his chest. His back and tail are getting the greenish color to...

    9 week old brahmas. Genders?

The lighter ones tail is kind of the same. She has more downy feathers near her tail. Also, the dark one has white spotting on the chest. That kind of made us think it's male too. Plus his eyes are more rooster looking. Thank you for responding.

    9 week old brahmas. Genders?

The lighter one is turning lavander. Pretty sure she's a hen. The dark brahma seems to be a roo which is great. We wanted a roo to add to the flock. Looking for some input from experienced brahma owners.

Does an adult silkie rooster recognize chicks that are males and kill them?

We have 6 5 week old silkie chicks that I'm starting the integration process with. It seems that the majority if not all of them are males. Who knows right? My question is.....will my adult silkie rooster recognize the males at this age and if so will he be ok with them?

my chickens are still eating their eggs

We ran into that problem with ours at one point. We started giving them more protein (boiled eggs, tuna, meat, nutritional yeast, etc) and also more calcium and it stopped. We also got more eggs from the older girls who weren't laying anymore.

    Grass-less Dirty Chicken Run

If you can get bags of sand and add it yo the run. Lots of sand. If your run is covered you can add DE to the sand and it'll help not only with mites and luce but it'll also help keep moisture under control. I add DE to our run and inside the coop every couple months and it's been awesome.

    Is my coop all wrong?!

The coop looks like it'll be big enough. We live in maine and from past experience the smaller coops stay warmer with the heat from the chickens bodies. I woukd definitely move one roosting bar. They are too close. I'd also do as suggested and put smaller hardware cloth on the opening. Rats can...
