Hey everyone,
My bsf bin is up and running like gang busters. Somehow I'm breeding some different types of beetles too. That was unintentional, but the chickens love it, so I'm gonna let it ride. When I pull my catchment bins to feed the larvae to the chickens there is a distinct apple cider...
Yes, food and water inside the coop right by the nest as well as in the run, none of which can be accessed by any other chicken. I do make sure to diligently check the mammas 2-3 times a day, just to make sure all is well. She gave no indications that there was anything untoward. And she was...
I was just going to post something about this, but I have been having trouble for the last 2 years. I have my hens sit on no more than 6 eggs at a time. At most, I have had 4 hatch successfully...but then they don't survive. Some the hen will kick out immediately, some will peep around for a day...
I have her in a coop by herself, just in case. So she has all the access to food and water she needs. It was fortunate that I had jus built out another coop, in case we needed to quarantine anyone. She has her own coop and run, so she can still see and socialize with the flock, but they can't...
She's maybe a year old buff orp, it's hard for me to tell my older girls from the younger now. She was laying but hasn't laid in the 3 days that she's been quarantined. I have baby chicks that I am adding to the flock, so currently everyone is getting organic chick feed with free choice oyster...
Hi everyone,
I have a sick hen, her comb and wattle are very light colored, she's listless, I'm not certain she is eating or drinking (I have food and water available.)Her poop is very runny, like egg whites, with a green slimy slug of poo in it. I suspect that she has some worms. I have added...
Did your little pipped egg make it? Today is warm and 57percent humidity, and my broody chicken has been off the nest twice today. I have one egg that's zippered, but I see no more movement (i think it's gone), but I have peeps coming from a pipped egg. I'm just curious as to how your egg did...
I have an auto waterer for my big girls, and roo. I absolutely love it! As long as it rains at least once every 10-14 days we don't have to think about the water.
I'm going to come up with a different solution than the canvas over the top, the chickens get up there and peck holes in it, but...
Hi all,
We are about a month away from adding to our flock, and I'm trying to prepare. I've raised baby chicks before, and I used the plastic water that screws on to the red base and gravity feeds to water the chicks. I hate that thing. Mine doesn't tighten down all the way (it jumps the track)...
I will take a good look at roost time to ight to see if I see any pin feathers popping out. I'll also watch closer for any feather pluckers.
Thank you so much for your ideas!
I don't think so. He is the alpha head honcho, and I don't see him allowing anybody to pluck him. I have watched them when they range, and haven't seen any of that behavior. I guess they could in the morning before we let them out of the coop, but again...I don't think he'd put up with that.
Is...
Hi all,
We've noticed that our rooster has a super red, raw looking butt. We've checked for mites and lice, and saw none. I have noticed any messy poo feathers on him that might indicate gleet. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it, no lethargy...it just looks really bad. He has a harem of 11...
We just got started 😨. She just started brooding last night. The coop got up to 111 at the heat of the day. I tried opening the hatch, but she hated it. It's so warm she's not even sitting on the eggs, just sitting next to them. I am just gonna keep an eye on her, and try to trust that she knows...
I just posted a very similar post! I live in east Texas, and my coop temp climbs in the 100s everyday lately. Of all the times to go broody....you'd think they'd pick a cooler temp.
