2 Day Old Chick Eyes Closed

An update for anyone following along. I'm pretty sure it was a sign of dehydration. After spending time with the chicks in the evening, I noticed they were having a very hard time getting water out of their waterer. I switched the tip and made sure she (and the others) were able to get enough to...

2 Day Old Chick Eyes Closed

Chicks arrived yesterday from Meyer Hatchery. Everything going well. My buff brahma is lively and full of spunk. This morning I noticed her eyes looked a little squinty but thought that maybe she was just tired. I went to check on her around 2:30pm and she is still spunky, but her eyes are...

Only 1 of 4 hens laying (2 years old)

This is a good suggestion. I may actually get a camera and put in the coop pointed at the boxes too, just to see if I have an egg eater. I'm not going to cull the flock. My family loves them like pets so eggs or not, we will keep them.

Only 1 of 4 hens laying (2 years old)

They have a feeder in their run full of Purina Layer Crumble. I was giving them fresh fruit (watermelon/raspberries/blueberries... basically whatever was leftover from my toddler), yogurt, and some treat mixes I purchased at my local farm store. Never at the same time; they would only get one...

Only 1 of 4 hens laying (2 years old)

Interesting. I can try that. No free ranging. It’s far too dangerous where I live… far too many predators.

Only 1 of 4 hens laying (2 years old)

My 4 hens (2 Easter Eggs, 1 Golden Comet, 1 Black Australorp) all laid eggs their first summer into winter. They slowed down in the winter, as expected (I'm in NJ, USA). In the spring (last year), 1 Easter Egger didn't lay much but the other 3 were very consistent. In the fall, we upgraded their...

    Flat Paper-Looking Egg

What is up with the flat egg? I thought it was a piece of paper in the coop until I pulled it out. The shell isn't particularly hard or soft, but definitely appears to be a shell. No yolk or white. Everything has been normal until this. Is there anything to worry about? I think I found a thread...

Pullet, Roo, or Wait and See?

Good news - Dumpling turned out to be a hen.

    Cuddly Chicks in the Coop

So my chicks will be 9 weeks old this week. They moved out to the coop, spent a week strictly inside (to teach them where home is- read about that here) and then we started to let them out into their run. Each night they did great coming back before dark. This weekend, however, they didn’t want...

Is my ISA Brown 7 week old a cockerel or a pullet??

It's possible that a different breed snuck into the same bin, she looks a lot like my Golden Comet who is just about the same age (7 weeks tomorrow). But they are sex-linked too, so even if you did get a Golden Comet, you're still good.

Is my ISA Brown 7 week old a cockerel or a pullet??

ISA Browns are sex-linked, so I think you should be okay if the chick was brown.

    Squawking Chick

But why would she cry even when we are down there playing with her? Plus, we got her at a few days old, if chicks imprint on the first moving object, it wouldn’t have been us, would have been someone at the hatchery I’m sure.

    Squawking Chick

New chicken owners here! Our chicks are growing up well, and it’s time to get them out to their coop. They really should have gone last week but we had some bitterly cold nights plus we wanted to work on fortifying the coop. The question I want to ask is why are the chicks crying at night...

Pullet, Roo, or Wait and See?

Thanks everyone. I'll report back in a couple of weeks and I'll take pics of the other chicks too to be extra thorough. I may or may not have already cried at the idea of giving up one of my babies!

Pullet, Roo, or Wait and See?

My chicks are 4 weeks old (just a little shy in these pictures). I have 2 Easter Eggers, a Golden Comet, and an Australorp. The EEs are both the same size, but I noticed that Dumpling (pictured here) has a slightly larger comb than her EE sister, Nugget. Dumpling is definitely the bossiest of...

    2 week chick poop question

Hi all, New chicken mama here. I’ve been doing lots of reading here but felt like I wanted to ask for my own reassurance. We got our chicks almost 2 weeks ago (Friday will be 2 weeks). Last night, we noticed two of the four had runny poop and one (Tuck) was pooping a lot. One time she pooped...
