So my lavenders are really growing. But Heather is definitely still a runt. Definitely smaller and with slower feather development than the other four. But she seems to be ok otherwise. I try to make sure she gets some extra attention every day, and check her crop to make sure she is getting...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I have several small rubber feed tubs sitting around that we fill with water. They drink from them, stand in them, sit in them. They love them. Maybe they just like the view of the night sky. 😂 Some Thirst-day pics Orchid I think this is Cotton All but 1 bantam Liberty Aspen and...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

So how do you train them? I am spending time with them every day. My husband or I pick them up every day and hold them, sometimes giving team a few treats and sometimes not. We are “firm but friendly” with them, except when Cotton misbehaves and then he gets carried around or locked in the...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

The “mini-coop” that I use as a hospital or brooder coop is in the run. That provides both ways to get out of site and multiple levels to get on. There are also 5 gallon buckets/coolers that have food or water in them that can break line of site. We never removed one of the ladders when we were...

Thank you. Luckily I am 1-2 hours from the worst of the flooding. But we did get close to 5” of rain since Friday, and it is raining again today. Everything is wet/muddy. Really glad we put the concrete floor that is about 4-5” thick in the coop last year.

Rooster Experts - I have some questions for you. So in many ways I feel like I won the “straight run lottery”. Out of 11 potential roosters I am now fairly confident I only ended up with two cockerels. But….that also means I ended up with two cockerels. I know many of you have multiple roosters...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

My sister had a cat named Kiko when we were little, which is Hawaiian for Spot. (We lived in Hawaii at the time.) My take on washed vs unwashed, etc. Based on research I did when I first got chickens, it is unnecessary to wash them when first laid/collected. They will actually last longer...

Meloxicam is the generic name for the medication. Not a brand name. Just like Acetaminophen is the generic and Tylenol is the brand. It is also widely used in veterinary practice for many animals. I got it prescribed for my chickens, and have also gotten it for llamas, etc.

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Those breeds are all awesome. I always wanted a Scottish Fold, but they are prone to ear infections. American Curls are cool too. This is Frogger, our suspected Maine Coone mix. She’s over 10 pounds and is actually very skinny. Big and has the longest tail I have ever seen on a cat. None of...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I am really glad I drained Buffy several weeks ago. She was really struggling until I did it, and has been much more comfortable since with very little sign of refilling yet. I did use a syringe but pulled it out very slowly over the course of about 30-45 minutes, and was careful to take less...

Hmmmmmm So that means it is “rooster confirmed” for Nestle. Still no crowing from Cotton, but it is pretty obvious he is a cockerel. This picture was a week or so ago, comb and wattles are even bigger now.
