Ooh! Idk why I didn't think of making just a nice fresh-squeezed lemonade. I'm gonna do that! In addition to some dessert. Still gotta decide what to make.
What desserts are you guys making for fourth of July? If I can't think of something more creative, I might just make some sort of mixed berry pie with blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries.
Glad to hear you guys had fun! Every year I think I'll have time to make the drive from Cleveland, OH, but every year something comes up. Maybe next year! I'd love to meet more chicken people.
Good to know! I typically try to steer clear of the high production super layers when I can, because they typically get reproductive issues and don't live long. Hopefully she doesn't have those genes.
But I don't want to be negative. She's a healthy hen right now so I should be happy. :)
No habla español, but it seems the tip of your bird's toe was cut off. It could also have just been born that way. I don't think it is cause for concern. If it was an injury, it looks like it healed well. They should live a very normal life.
I love Light Brahmas! Enjoy your birds :)
At just 15 weeks old, Clover laid her first egg today! It's more blue than I thought it would be, but still beautiful. I know sometimes the first few eggs look different from what color they end up laying for the rest of their lives though, so we'll see.
It used to be 6 here in Ohio, but now it's 4. I was buying 6 meat chickens straight run, and added 2 laying hen chicks for a total of 8. That's how I ended up with only 2 :)
Just updating for anyone now or in the future who is interested in this hybrid...
At about 14.5 weeks, it seems Clover's earlobes are starting to develop and there is a possibility they could be green like someone else's on this thread's were. It's too early to tell, but they may just have a...
Just seeing this now. Thanks so much for giving Lincoln (formerly Link) a nice new home! He will be missed in our chicken yard, but I know he will have a great life at your place.
It was nice to see you too! We will definitely keep you updated.
Same experience for me today! The torrential downpours the past two days may have been bad for my leaky basement, but they were great for weed-pulling in the strawberry patch today! :)
Thank you, BYC mods! I do moderation on another website and know how time-consuming it can be. We appreciate all of your efforts that keep this place up and running!
Hi! She's about 14 weeks now and I'm almost 100% sure she's a pullet. Her comb and wattles got redder so I was worried, but they kind of have stayed the same and haven't gotten large like her brother's (Brahma cockerel of the same age). Let me try to get a pic for you.
Thank you both! I will give this a try next time we process. We usually keep 1-2 for roasting whole and tying the legs before baking can be a bit of a pain in the butt sometimes.
Unrelated to the main topic of your post, but what is it you did there with the chicken legs of the processed chickens? How did you tie them together with another piece of skin, and can you cook them this way in the oven?
Looks interesting to me and I've never seen that done before!
