I’d say he’s a boy, yes. Very raspy and quiet.
My boys didn’t get their full adult voice until around 3 months old, so his voice being immature now is normal.
I won’t go into detail, but the way she was killed was very reminiscent of a hawk attack I saw happen in the flock previously.
Yes, the hawk may return.
My property is very wide-open. The best thing I can do right now to deter hawks is keeping my birds in their run for a while. Make the hawks...
Sorry for the loss of your little one, too.
The rest of the flock seems alright, yes. I do intend on keeping them cooped up for a good while, though. I want to deter the same hawk from coming back.
2 years, 3 months. That’s how long the flock has gone without casualty. Unfortunately, after yesterday, that count must be reset.
Yesterday afternoon, a predator, likely a hawk, attacked and killed one of my hens: Banana Split. I wanted this thread to be a small compile of writing and pictures...
Agree on Khaki Campbells, and also agree that they should be separated from your chicken hens. Very dangerous, especially with few / no duck hens.
Speaking of.. 2 females is not enough for 2 males. Boy ducks need multiple girls each to prevent overmating. Typically 3, 4, even 5+ females per 1...
The “abababa” sound from the Sebastopol sounds like my Buff girl.
But I’ve never heard my African girl make that tire-screeching sound before, omg! That’s the Chinese?? I want to say that’s a male sound, but I do also think their appearance is a bit female-like.
Looking into it a bit, it seems the magpie bill sexing theory hasn’t been tested very much.
I think the answer is that, when older, females lean into dark & dull colored bills, and males light & bright. But this is true for other breeds, too. It’s unrelated to their bill pattern as babies...
Yeah, my 2 will reach into & up to whatever they can. They could jump up to reach something higher, but would certainly prefer not to. If they can’t see what’s in the beds, they’ll never be tempted to jump up.
Mine can reach up about 3’, and stick their necks into something about 1’, I’d say.
I thought by now you could tell by weight alone, no? Muscovy hens are half the size of drakes. Hens around 5-6 lbs, and drakes can be well over 10 lbs.
Voice description sounds like female to me. Visually, I’m uncertain.
As an artist, I’m okay with this. It’s 1 AI, in 1 community, designed for 1 specific purpose - coloring pages of Tudy.
If it was larger, or broader, I might be more opposed. But as it is right now, I think it’s okay.
This was fun to play with!
I created a bunch of cute & silly images, including,
Tudy greeting the neighbors.
Tudy sailing across the lake.
Tudy sailing across the vast sea.
Tudy running from an alien invasion!
Tudy lounging in her floaty with some confused onlookers.
Tudy looking up to a...
I’ve had all different breeds and many mixed breeds. None of my ducks truly like being picked up. A few will tolerate it more than others, but would still rather I left them be. It’s just how ducks are, nothing personal.
My ducks will follow me, sit by me, eat from my hand.. but any approach...
I haven’t had my birdies long enough for that, yet.
But, we just passed the 2 year mark with no tragedies! And, I’m currently working on building a new, secure duck coop. AND my eldest boy is approaching 8 years of age. So.. Good chances, I hope, in the coming years, I’ll get to see him pass...
