    The New Head Chicken Question

Thank you for the reply, she was a wonderful hen. We do not own any roosters, just a small flock of 5 hens. It is two different flocks and the new leader is from the original flock (which was a flock of 3 until maddy-bird passed) and then there is a second flock of 3 that are nearly 2 years...

    The New Head Chicken Question

Our sweet maddy-bird passed away today. it was heartbreaking for us, she was our head hen and the queen. Such a character and so fun to be around...... Onto my question, we have just a small flock. The next in line to be the leader had started working her way to head hen immediately....which is...

When/what to feed a chicken recovering from impacted crop

Also, what about food. She apparently ate more of the egg that I left in the crate. We moved her crate outside next to chicken run so she could get some fresh air and see her sisters. She started drinking water when we did that :-) It may have been the change in water bowl that helped that....is...

When/what to feed a chicken recovering from impacted crop

Hi! I'm pretty sure my chicken is experiencing impacted crop. I was out of town and my neighbor feed her a lot of lettuce. She is not lethargic but didn't sleep on her roost bar two nights ago and not walking around playing nor eating. We brought her inside yesterday and she was regurgitating...

How to stop my chick from making a mess

they are very expensive, I agree! It's just between all the options what saved my sanity. One thing it has really helped with, is protecting the wooden box from the broken egg shells, that she used to always have (she's always been sort of the "special" one). The padding somewhat blocked the...

How to stop my chick from making a mess

I use these nest pads (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07S1QCCMZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) - the pads fit the box perfectly 13x13. I can't remember why I started using these nest pads vs straw or hemp (I use hemp in the run). I just remember I went through testing a lot...

How to stop my chick from making a mess

One of my chickens has gotten into this bad habit of tearing up and kicking out all of the nest box beddings from all 3 of the boxes. I'm wasting a lot of money replacing the bedding and it's also making the nest box uncomfortable for the other ladies. Any tricks on how to get her to stop? She's...

Question about temporary light in the coop

During the cold spell we had the past few weeks, we added a heat lamp (very safely) to the coop. I know it's not the best idea but we had to because we were worried about one of our chickens after one very cold night - the next day she was still in a corner all day almost frozen (Live NC, not...

Help, I have mold growing in my coop

What would you recommend? I worry about putting chemicals on the walls and ceiling that would hurt the chickens when they inhale it? Bleach has such a strong smell.

Help, I have mold growing in my coop

no leak other then a ton rain, a lot of humidity and then I did have a stryofoam cooler in there with ice in it with a fan attachment to blow cool air into the coop. The chickens pecked at the cooler and the water did leak out of it but when I felt around on the hemp, etc. it was dry

Help, I have mold growing in my coop

We just went through major rain with Tropical Debby. My coop is made of wood walls, wood everything, but solid lament floors covered with hemp - tons of humidity here in NC. We have plenty of windows and ventilation. It's a full walk-in, about 5X10. It's green fuzzy mold, covers the walls and...

I've heard about the exams, they make me so nervous. this is only my second year around chickens and I'm still learning. They are the sweetest things ever! Lethargic and one eye not opening

At first I thought maybe she was just acting strange because of the elipse, we are east coast, NC so no darkness really happened....but this started just before the peak of it but none of my other chickens are acting weird and she is just sitting on the ground, hard to keep her head up and one...

Has anyone tried releasing the fly predators by spalding? I'm curious to try this year, but worried they will become a nuisance...does anyone know if they hurt your garden? or do they come buzzing around people?
